A new Kingdom Hearts game has just been announced by Square Enix, although it is not what you think it is. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is in fact a rhythm game that will be making its way to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch later in 2020. Watch the trailer below:
A rhythm game spinoff is nothing new to Square Enix of course, as the Final Fantasy franchise had its own in the form of the Theatrhythm games. As one might expect, the game will feature many hallmarks from the series, including visiting Disney worlds, and having the the likes of Goofy and Donald Duck by your side again. This time around, instead of an action RPG, you will be hitting commands timed to the music.
As the Kingdom Hearts franchise always had a strong soundtrack, this move is particularly interesting and smart one. On top of its original arrangements, look forward to the game’s take on classic Disney songs.
Kingdom Hearts III came out in January 2019 to much fanfare, becoming a big hit in the process. With that in mind, the ending left room for a continuation, and Melody of Memory appears to be filling the gap, as it involves Kairi digging into Sora’s past. The exploration of Sora’s memories has been a staple for the franchise, as it allows new games to retell stories from past entries while implementing new mechanics.
