Jayf Soh, also known better as “Babael” back when he was a caster for Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm. Since his achievement in casting on the world stage at BlizCon 2015, he stepped down from the world of casting and now became the CEO of an eSports organization, Resurgence. It was also our pleasure to interview Jayf as he spared his time for us out of his busy schedule which we deeply appreciate.
About Resurgence
Resurgence was founded back in 2016 by Jayf Soh with only a single competitive team for Heroes of the Storm. Now to date, Resurgence has grown into a multi-title eSports organization since June 2017. With 12 teams currently playing across 9 titles like Hearthstone, League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, PUBG, Fortnite, Counter-Strike, Arena of Valor and Mobile Legends, they are now known as a professional Southeast Asian eSports team based in Singapore and expanding even further across mobile and computer platforms.
The Interview
During the interview with Jayf, we asked a couple of questions that some of you might be interested in about the world of eSports. One of it is of how a person from a different career field transition into becoming a CEO of an eSports organization and managing an eSports team. To that, Jayf replied in an assuring manner, that though it’s different from managing one’s self to managing multiple persons or personalities, he was able to conquer it.
“…what I feel we need to do as a team owner is that we need to manage all these people and how they carry themselves in front of their fans, in front of different cameras…” said Jayf
Because the players and the team represent the organization, Jayf has to think of ways to reach out to the many different personalities and behaviors and bring them into unison – sharing the same vision in bringing up Resurgence just as the name implied. Without a doubt, a competitive gamer can some times be difficult to handle, but it is all for their own good to carry themselves when they become an eSports personality standing on the world stage.
Aside from that, Resurgence is also one of the eSports organization that actually pays their players a monthly salary. As some rising eSports players are still young, they needed the salary to pay for their own living expenses. Since the competitive scene is ever active, the players are also always actively training at the Resurgence headquarters with all the facilities provided. With the salary, it saves the players their time from practicing their game and saving them money from playing at cyber cafes.
“So what we do is, we identify five people with potential and we provide them a platform to help groom them and take care of their financial challenges. And this would allow them more time into the game and they can do what they do best which is to compete” said Jayf
As the world of eSports is ever growing, new games are actively being introduced to the community. With that, Resurgence is open to expand their divisions provided with enough research on the competitive landscape of the game before expansion. Thanks to the success of the teams, Resurgence is now fielding 12 teams in 9 games which is a huge growth and achievement compared to when they first begun.
