Spider Man developer Insomniac has become the victim of a ransomware attack, with sensitive documents from the developers uploaded online as proof they’ve been hacked.
First reported by CyberDaily, hacker group Rhysida has claimed responsibility for the attack- uploading various personal documents such as staff passports as well as development materials for titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine.
Having hacked Insomniac, the group are now extorting them for money by auctioning the data.
Representatives from Sony Interactive Entertainment have said the hack is limited to Insomniac Games, with no other PlayStation subsidiaries affected by the attack.
“We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack,” an SIE representative told Polygon. “We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted.
Ransomware attacks can be devastating for companies- Capcom fell victim to a similar attack just before the release of Monster Hunter Rise- that saw information about the game’s as-of-yet unannounced PC version leaked online.
Similarly, the existence of Grand Theft Auto 6 was also leaked via a hack, that saw in-development footage of the game thrown online a whole year before any kind of public announcement about the game.
