Idol Showdown , the Hololive fan fighting game has had a very successful launch- overtaking some of the biggest fighting games with over 10,000 players over the weekend.
For context, Idol Showdown having 10,000 players over the weekend puts it above titles like Tekken 7, Street Fighter V and Guilty Gear Strive.
There’s a lot of reasons for the game’s success- for one, the title is free to play, meaning literally anyone with a PC could have downloaded it to check it out.
Hololive idols themselves also streamed the game over the weekend, with many opening lobbies to play with fans- a good way to get people to try it out.
The weekend even saw it get proper FGC support- with Mizuumi opening a fan wiki to better teach players the ins and outs of the game, though a lot of the information is as of writing still under construction.
The game’s developers issued a tweet in response to the success, saying the game had surpassed 200,000 downloads since launch.
“2 years ago a small group of Hololive fans had a dream. To make a Hololive fighting game for fans to enjoy. It sounded impossible, but they were determined. After developing for 2 years, they finally brought Idol Showdown to the world. Thank you for making our dream come true!“, they said.
Vtuber fans have been hard at work making Hololive fangames- the previous title to see similar popularity was Vampire Survivors-like HoloCure, which continues to get updates featuring new playable characters.
While not being official games, these titles exist under Cover Corporations fan work guidelines– they allow derivative work as long as they’re not made for profit, hence the free to play nature of the games.
