The addition and portrayal of Hitler in mobile game Judgment Day: Angel of God. Heaven or Hell? resulted in outrage and backlash. Jewish groups in Australia have pushed for the removal of this character in the game, which has since been removed yesterday.
The game, which has been advertised for users aged 12 and above, has been downloaded more than a million times on the App Store and Google Play Store.
Described as an afterlife simulator, Judgment Day: Angel of God. Heaven or Hell? lets players pass judgment onto deceased individuals. Players get to decide whether the individual in question goes to heaven or hell.
One of these individuals who appear in the mobile game is none other than Hitler, Fuhrer of Nazi Germany. The game depicts him in various scenes, such as standing in front of a concentration camp and holding a baby to indicate his desire of creating a master race.
According to Dr. Dvir Abramovich, Chairman of Australia’s Anti-Defamation Committee:
“Just when I thought the abuse of the Holocaust could not get more vulgar and exploitative, this sickening game has proven that we have reached a horrific low and that all bets are off. There is nothing funny or amusing about a monster such as Hitler, responsible for the extermination of the six million Jews, including 1.5million children. Why Google and Apple approved this moral outrage is hard to understand, and I call on them to immediately pull this degrading game from their platform and to apologise for this offence.”
Judgment Day: Angel of God. Heaven or Hell? is published by Matchingham Games. It also features other historical figures, such as Mahatma Gandhi and Vlad the Impaler.
