Former PlatinumGames co-founder Hideki Kamiya has expressed his continued desire to develop Scalebound, the action RPG that was cancelled by Microsoft in 2017. Kamiya, who left Platinum approximately 18 months ago and now works at his new studio Clovers Inc, was recently spotted watching YouTube videos of early Scalebound footage with colleagues. The moment was captured and shared on Clovers Inc’s official X account.

“Noticed some excitement around Kamiya’s desk,” the tweet stated. “He was reminiscing about the development of Scalebound while watching YouTube videos. It never made it to release, but even now, he still feels proud of it.”
In the video, Kamiya explains to his colleagues that the game’s protagonist had modern elements like headphones and a smartphone despite being in a fantasy world with dragons. When one developer compared it to an “isekai reincarnation” (a popular manga/anime sub-genre featuring characters transported to other worlds), Kamiya agreed, noting “That’s the big trend right now.”
The tweet also quoted Kamiya saying “I’d love to make it again someday,” though this statement wasn’t shown in the video itself. Kamiya subsequently retweeted the video with a direct message to Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer: “let’s do it, Phil.”

This isn’t the first time Kamiya has expressed interest in reviving the project. In early 2022, he indicated he wanted to “open discussions with Microsoft” about officially bringing Scalebound back to life. At that time, he made a similar appeal to Spencer and later told VGC, “No, it’s not a joke, I’m totally serious about it.”
When asked about the possibility of reviving Scalebound in late September, Spencer reportedly smiled and said “there’s currently nothing to say about Scalebound.” Currently, Kamiya is working on a sequel to Okami at Clovers Inc while the future of Scalebound remains uncertain.
