Last week, Steam had launched their app called Steam Link which is currently still in Beta for the mobile. The app allows you to connect to your Steam account on your PC and launch a game on your phone. So we were curious as to how would the game turn out to look like on our phone, we figured, we would try it out and have a look. If you’d like you can also follow the steps below:
Step 1: Download the Steam Link app
Obviously, you’ll need to download the app first. The app is currently only available for Android because controllers are apparently compatible with Android devices only, for now (sorry iOS!). So head down onto the Play Store and download the Steam Link (BETA) app.
Step 2: Connect your controller
We used a PS4 controller because we can and you can follow the steps here on how to pair a Dualshock PS4 controller with your phone.
Step 3: Launch the Steam Link app
Once you have connected your controller with your phone, you’ll need to launch the Steam Link app and connect to your PC. It is highly recommended as stated in the previous article that your PC is connected to at least a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection or an ethernet. You’ll of course have to run Steam first before your Steam Link app can connect to your Steam account on your PC.
Once connected, it will prompt your Steam on your PC to download a new driver. Don’t worry, that’s not a virus. Just download it and then try to reconnect your mobile Steam Link app to your PC if you failed the first time. Then, select “Start Playing”, and you will see your Steam games listed there.
Check out our playtest video below:
In the video above, we used PUBG to playtest the game on one of our colleague’s phone (a OnePlus 3T) to connect with the PS4 controller and Steam. It ran seamlessly and smoothly as you can see. However, because PC games do not magically turn to become compatible on mobile, it takes some tweaking with the controls to actually play the game on the phone. So far after tweaking with the controls, we were able to move around, pick up guns and items, interact with doors, shoot and jump in the game. It worked out pretty fine but it takes some effort to master an FPS game with a controller AND with a small screen.
Aside from that, you can basically run any Steam games on your phone and still get gorgeous graphics on it. Though it may ‘lag’ some times, but the app is still on BETA. You may not be able to play your Steam games on your phone comfortably for now, this will only pave the steps to produce better technology for mobile and PC in the future.
