Since the announcement of Hearthstone Battlegrounds in BlizzCon 2019 and we finally went deep down into the salt bath to see if we can manage to pull out a victory. We prayed high and low for the minion and hero choices but this article is not about that, in this article, I will share my first impressions of the game for you.

Gameplay

You start off having to choose a character from 2 given to you at the start of the game. Each player starts with 40 HP and each hero character will have a hero skill. The skill requires an activation cost in gold.

Phases

The Phases goes like this

Recruit, combat and repeat.

Combat

Combat phase is a phase where minions from both sides clash. The sequence for minons to attack starts from left to right, you attack once, then your opponent attack once, repeat. After the minions attack, it’s the heroes turn. If your side of the field still has minions, your hero will attack,; if the opponents still has units, your opponent will attack.

Your hero will have an attack value which is determined by your Tavern Level, Each minions who survives the combat phase will add one point (per star the minion is ranked) of attack to your hero

Recruit

During Recruit phase, you can buy minions and upgrade your tavern to get better units in the next recruit phase. Each minion cost you 3 gold, upgrading differs for each level. If you did not upgrade, the cost will go down by one each turn. There’s also a refresh function that cost 1 gold each time you refresh. Freeze allows you to no let the minions in the tavern to be flushed away, and it’s free, but if you are doing that, remember to buy everything you need first as it will proceed immediately after you freeze them.

During this phase, you can also sell minions to get a gold refunded. Minions can be upgraded when you have 3 of the same copy, the game call it a “Triple”. When you hit a Triple, you will get a “Triple Reward”. This will let you discover a minion from a tier above your current tavern level. Once you deployed a minion, you cant take it back, so deploy carefully!

Personally, I enjoyed the game although I haven’t actually won any of it, but time will tell. I just need more experience on how it works and come up with a proper strategy and I’ll be good.
