The final Blu Ray release for Gundam The Witch From Mercury is out, and it looks like the Blu Ray team have their opinion on whether or not Suletta and Miorine are married.
Screenshots of the Blu Ray release have found their way online, with fans noting that some scenes have been edited to give the character Miorine a ring on her finger in the series closing scenes.
An interview with the anime’s director Hiroshi Kobayashi, also included in the Blu-Ray release also confirms that seeing the two leads get hitched was always part of the plan, echoing the plot of Shakespeare’s The Tempest (Which various characters are named after).
“We had decided to write an epilogue, but we decided on the specific number of years later. The ending itself is similar to “Tempest,” with Suletta and Miorine getting married and becoming partners”, the interview reads.
The ending for Witch From Mercury had been the cause of some controversy online- despite the entire plot revolving around an engagement and characters literally being referred to as in-laws, some fans took offense at the idea that post-timeskip the female leads would actually get married.
The backlash prompted Bandai Namco Entertainment to issue a statement saying that the ending was “open to interpretation”, with many fans seeing this as a lukewarm way of not angering either side.
“We would like to leave the work to the interpretation of each and every one of you who has viewed the book, and would like you to enjoy the work”, the statement from Bandai Namco Entertainment reads.
If anything all this interest in the context of the show’s epilogue is a big testament to Witch From Mercury’s success- it’s people actually engaging with the themes of the anime, unlike series like Iron Blooded Orphans whose lasting legacy is a series of bizarre memes about the character Orga.
