Winter Celebration in February caught players off guard. Our guide will analyse the value of the Christmas units in Tensura: King of Monsters.
No idea what this event is about? Wondering why is a Christmas event happening in February? Then you can check out our brief summary of Winter Celebration in this article. Once you are up to speed with how the Christmas event in Tensura: King of Monsters works, it is time to dive into this guide.
To roll or not to roll?
Besides the event shop which I will cover later in the guide, the only other new content added to Tensura: King of Monsters are the event characters. Note that these are not skins or costumes, but actual, entirely new units. Shion [Reindeer Emissary] and Shuna [Princess of Presents] are SP units.
In order to determine if you should roll for them or skip, let’s look at their skill sets:
Name | Shion [Reindeer Emissary] | Shuna [Princess of Presents] |
Auto Attack | 230% single target DMG. | 180% single target DMG. |
Ultimate Skill | Deal 208% DMG to all enemy units and stunning all sugared enemies for 1 round. (Stun: The character is unable to take an action) | Costs 20 mana, CD for 1 round at the beginning, 2 round CD thereafter | Present 1 gift to each teammate with a Christmas Stocking and restore 15% of their max HP. A Christmas Stocking can hold up to 2 gifts. (Gift: Increase the character’s DEF by 10%) | Costs 20 mana, CD for 0 round at the beginning, 2 round CD thereafter |
Aptitude | Every time Shion deals DMG to the enemy, the target is sugared. Sugared enemies deal 10% less DMG to Shion. This cannot be stacked. | Whenever an ally receives DMG, that ally gets a Christmas Stocking (Up to 1). When a Christmas Stocking is filled up by 2 gifts, the Christmas Stocking and 2 gifts to are consumed to remove all abnormal conditions and increase ATK by 20% for 2 rounds. (Christmas Stocking: Increase the character’s DEF by 10%) |
Synergy | If the enemy is suspending, deal 75% damage to the target, knocking it back. | If the enemy is suspending, deal 75% damage to the target 3 times, knocking it back. |
Aptitude | When a teammate launches an Auto Attack, Shion has a 25% chance of assisting with an auto attack. | Shuna’s Auto Attack has a 50% chance of giving one random teammate a Christmas Stocking to assist the attack. 1 Gift will be given to the teammate after. |
The female Kijins are great units, but the Christmas versions push it a step further.
Shion [Reindeer Emissary] is easily a contender for the strongest character in the game. Her base auto attack DMG is higher than Gabiru (but she lacks the skills to hit multiple times consecutively). Not only is she a fantastic DMG dealer, but her crowd control is downright broken, possibly even better than CC queen Eren. This is because her stun does not rely on RNG and has a shorter cooldown.
Christmas Shion’s ultimate lets her stun all enemies that she has dealt DMG to. This means that with a Rimuru equipping Mystery Cooldown and Effective Use, you can effectively stun the enemy team every round from Turn 4 onwards. Forget DPS, with this strategy, you will win 100% of the time.
By comparison, Christmas Shuna is less broken, but still a decent unit. She has the highest damaging Synergy skill in the game and a strong auto attack. However, her entire mechanic of Gifts and Christmas Stockings are rather lacklustre (who needs DEF when you can kill the enemy before they kill you?).
In essence, Shion [Reindeer Emissary] is overpowered. Just her and Rimuru alone can shut down the entire enemy team permanently. Her Ultimate Skill needs a nerf desperately. However, I cannot fully recommend you to pull from this banner. This is due to the limited availability of Stars Contracts.
Stars Contract
Since our guide will assume that you are the 99.5% of Tensura: King of Monsters players unlucky enough to pull a Christmas unit normally, you will need 70 Stars Contract to guarantee yourself either Shion [Reindeer Emissary] or Shuna [Princess of Presents].
This is a list of available free Stars Contracts:
20 Stars Contracts from event shop (costs 400 Winter Socks total)
8 Stars Contracts from 4 weeks of Special Summoning Gift Pack (costs 1600 Crystal Rocks total)
3 Stars Contracts from redemption codes
Total: 31 Stars Contracts
As such, you will not even get half of the Stars Contracts necessary for a guaranteed SP pull. In order to make it to 70, you will either need to redeem Stars Contract with Ownerless Proof or use Star Gold (real money).
10 Ownerless Proof = 1 Stars Contract
20 Star Gold (RM 13.30 / USD 3.30) = 1 Stars Contract
Ownerless Proof is the material that drops whenever you make a pull from the normal banner. 1 pull gives you 1 Ownerless Proof. While it is theoretically possible to farm up 390 Ownerless Proof by gathering enough Fetters Contract/Crystal Rocks, you will likely need to top up with real money.
If you do decide to spend cash, DO NOT exchange your money directly for Stars Contracts via the Summon screen. Instead, buy the Stars Packs from the event shop. The most value for money purchases are the daily limited Christmas Stars Supply Pack (M) and event limited Special Stars Pack.
6 Star Gold (RM 3.99 / USD 1) = 1 Stars Contract from Christmas Stars Supply Pack (M)
30 Star Gold (RM 19.95 / USD 4) = 5 Stars Contract from Special Stars Pack
Note that you can only buy 1 Christmas Stars Supply Pack (M) per day, and only 2 Special Stars Packs.
Even after all that, you might not even get the overpowered Shion [Reindeer Emissary] as there is only a 50% chance of getting her via pity pull. As a result, unless you feel lucky or have money to spend, I cannot recommend pulling from the current event banner. Instead, save for Milim.
The rank SS loli dragon
It is extremely likely that the next banner will feature the Demon Lord in all her glory. Milim is extremely strong, being one of the few characters capable of triggering Synergy purely from her auto attack. Not only that, her Ultimate Skill is one of the hardest-hitting ultimates in the game.
Thus, it is recommended to skip Winter Celebration and save for Milim. After all, unlike the current banner with a 50% chance of getting Shion [Reindeer Emissary] via pity pull, the pity pull on Milim’s banner guarantees her dropping.
Closing thoughts
Winter Celebration does not actually have much to celebrate. Besides the SP units and using Winter Socks to exchange for typical items in the event store, there is not a lot of new content for this event. In a nutshell, save for Milim.
