The Frozen Darkness event for Punishing Gray Raven just dropped, with the majority of the playerbase ready to splurge their BCs on Alpha.
This guide will teach you the best way to tackle this event, especially for free-to-play players. Even if you are a light or heavy spender, some of the tips compiled below may be useful to you!
Frozen Darkness Overview
With 5 weeks for this event, F2P players should be able to complete all the event missions and buy all the items in the event shop.
The two biggest additions that come with this event are Lucia: Crimson Abyss (Alpha from here on out) and Kamui: Bastion, which are S and A-Rank constructs respectively. While Kamui is obtainable through grinding or gacha, Alpha is only available via gacha (no, her interlude missions do not drop her shards).
To get Alpha, F2P players should have 15,000 BCs to be able to guarantee her dropping via pity pull in the Event banner (do not pull from the Special Event banner if you are F2P). If you still have the 2,500 event construction tickets, then you need only 12,500 BCs. If you have less than that or you do not think you can farm that many BCs in time, do not worry as Alpha will still be available even after her dedicated banner is gone.
Note: Alpha’s banner is only available until September 1, 7:59 am UTC.
Do not buy Kamui’s shards right away!
The Event Shop is selling 30 Kamui: Bastion inver shards, but you should not buy them straight away. Bastion is available in all of the game’s banners, even Basic Construct Research. You save a lot more shards from pulling him normally. If you were to unlock him by spending the 30 shards, then you pull him, you would only get 18 shards, which is a waste.
Unless you do not plan to pull from any banners in this event for whatever reason, it is recommended not to buy Kamui: Bastion shards until you obtain him via gacha. Just like Alpha, Kamui: Bastion will be available in Punishing Gray Raven even after Frozen Darkness is over.
Tackling Frozen Darkness
Note that only Commandants level 40 and above can take on Frozen Darkness. If you have not reached level 40 yet, grind away!
While you do not need to clear the story right away, it is recommended that you do. Not only do you get to play as Alpha as the game feeds you unlimited Sword Waves in certain parts of the missions, the first time clear rewards are well worth the stamina spent.
You should spend the majority of the event farming Arctic Night:
- S5 and/or C4 for Reagent He-4
- C5 for Memories
You need to complete 50 times of Normal and Challenge missions respectively in order to obtain all the event rewards. You should prioritise farming S5 first for Reagent He-4 as you should use them to buy Pattons. Once you have completed Normal 50 times, C4 is more efficient for Reagent He-4 in terms of stamina, but do note that it takes longer to clear.
If you feel like you have enough Reagent HE-4, consider farming C5 as it is the better alternative for farming Memories than Resource Mission AE-4.
Once Azure Scar unlocks on August 10, you should try to clear all 5 stages as possible for the BCs and Reagent HE-4. Once that is done, it is back to Arctic Night for event currencies.
Co-op mode is exactly the same as it was previously. There is no difference in rewards from facing Rosetta as compared to Osiris and Sister.
Event Shopping
All your Reagent HE-4 will be spent here. The most valuable item in the shopping list is the 6 star Memory, Patton. Patton is the definition of a solid physical damage Memory. Whereas your fire elemental mains will want Shakespeare while lightning mains will want Heisen, physical damage mains like Alpha benefit tremendously from Patton.
Even if you plan to use Frederick build for Alpha instead of Patton Build as mentioned in our Alpha guide, you should still be farming for Patton. Patton is used by both A2 and 2B in the upcoming NieR: Automata collab and is also the best Memory for basically every single physical DPS.
You can buy any Patton ranging from Memory slot 1 – 6. There is also no limit to each purchase of Patton. Each one costs 600 Reagent HE-4.
It is better to focus on buying slot 4, 5 and 6 Pattons first. This is because Darwin, which is usually paired with Patton, has higher stats in slot 1, 2 and 3 than in the bottom row. After getting your slot 4, 5 and 6 Pattons, get the Patton in the remaining upper slot that is not already used up by Darwin.
After getting your 4 Pattons, you should focus on getting another 2 more copies of each Patton in their respective slots. These copies will be useful for Resonance and Affixing, which are necessary to Awaken your Construct who is using those Pattons.
Once you bought your Pattons, you can then buy Kamui: Bastion inver shards if you have not pulled for him already (or if your luck is bad and you do not get him). From that point onwards, you can buy basically whatever you need at the moment, such as cogs or other resources.
