Meeting up with the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2 and accepting her challenge of riddles is an ordeal that would send you on an arduous journey as you crack your head deciphering her requests into answers. However, by the end of the challenge, you will come back rewarded for your achievements.
If you can’t wrap your head around her riddles, fret not as here we have detailed a walkthrough on how to solve the intricate riddles of the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and have you ready to clear “A Game of Wits” quest line and reap all its incredible rewards.
Sphinx’s First Location
Before going through all the riddle solutions, we must first find where the Sphinx lies. This elusive entity is quite hidden from the world and its first lair lies within the Mountain Shrine, the northern part of the map.
To get there, you would need to tread towards the northwest part of the map, and by the main road towards Checkpoint Rest Town, you may find a path that leads to a narrow valley with Harpies ready to strike down and likely an Ogre during your first visit.
As you clear your way through this area, you will find yourself at ruins and eventually a campsite with a Drake roaming about in the battlefield at a distance. Head towards the mountain at right instead and travel into the Ancient Battlefield, where you will find an entrance to a castle. Head in, fight some skeletons, and climb to the roof through the ladder by the left side.
Once you’re up the ladder, head to your right and you will find a wooden scaffolding by the castle wall, jump up and climb up the ladder, then head forward up the brick stairs. On your first visit, there will be a sleeping Cyclops here, so be ready to have a smackdown. After defeating the Cyclops, loot all you want, then climb up the ladder by the left where the giant beast originally slept. Simply move towards the broken wall when on top of the wooden scaffolding and you will be greeted with the entrance into Worldsend Cavern.
Head in there, slay any enemies, and navigate through the cave and eventually, you will reach an area with a hole in the center surrounded by wooden planks. Look to the right, and there will be a breakable boulder on your visit. Shatter it and navigate to the exit where you could either choose to face a Golem or run into another entrance by the end of the arena.
Enter the building and run towards the outdoor where stairs can be found on the right above some climbable ledges. Hike your way up the stairs and you will eventually meet the Sphinx sitting majestically at her shrine, awaiting your arrival.
Before we proceed with her riddles, it is recommended that you place a Portcrystal if you have any on-hand as it will help to return to her shrine easier as you would be asked to traverse across the maps multiple times. If you are not sure where to find any reusable Portcrystal, we have a guide for you.
Riddle of Eyes
“Our eyes are our allies, yet oft do they betray, for eyes tell lies, so I advise, and thence do lead astray. Yet how will your eyes advise you? Venture through yonder door, and retrieve that which of greatest value.”
For the first five riddles, you can tackle them in any other. The Riddle of Eyes is actually a straightforward riddle, as cryptic as the Sphinx’s words may be.
The Sphinx will ask you to grab a treasure in a dungeon that it points towards. Instead of traversing all over the dungeon, simply take a few steps in and look behind you. There will be a treasure chest above the entrance. Climb the ledges to the chest, open it, and grab the Sealing Phial.
Now the Sealing Phial has an extremely useful effect that will be handy in the later riddles, but simply hand it to the Sphinx to complete the Riddle of Eyes, since you will get to keep the bottle anyway.
Reward: Wakestone x1
Riddle of Madness
“Love is as twin to madness, they say. They are bound fast as night is to day. So bring forth your most beloved one to me, that I might gauge the depth of your insanity.”
This riddle is as simple as it sounds. Simply bring forth your most beloved means any character you may have a high affinity with, or have romanced. For example, you can bring along Ulrika, Beren, or anyone after their quests as long as they start blushing whenever they talk to you.
But the easiest way to clear this riddle is… simply to carry your pawns over to the pedestal and talk to the Sphinx. It is as simple as that since your main pawn is your most loyal. In my case, I brought all my pawns just to be safe.
Reward: Portcrystal x1
Riddle of Wisdom
“The parent knows the child, yet the reverse is far from true. The child knows not the parent: such is the parent’s due. I am a lost child; for kinship do I yearn. So bring to me my “Parent”. that might better learn.”
For this riddle, it is exactly what the Sphinx wants, bringing her a “Parent”. It is that specific, so to clear the objective, you would need to head over to the Riftstone of Fellowship, not any Riftstone, only this one specifically, to recruit a Pawn named “SphinxParent“. Some players have reported that pawns named “SphinxMother” and “SphinxFather” would work, but the safest choice would just be to recruit “SphinxParent”.
If you are unsure where is the Riftstone of Fellowship, it is the one in a tower northeast of Checkpoint Rest Town. For ease of recruitment, you can interact with the Riftstone again once side to read the list of available pawns. Note that pawns with “SphinxParent” as their name would work as non-official Capcom pawns did work for me.
Once recruited, simply bring the pawn to the platform in front of the Sphinx and “submit your answer”.
Reward: 1,200 RC
Riddle of Conviction
“Life is an enigma – a lender of mortal debt. Yet lighter pack makes fleeter foot and challenge nimbly met. So grant to me what you most prize, and thence elude your pondrous demise.”
As with other riddles from the Sphinx, it sounds vague and misleading. To complete the riddle, simply give the ominous beast any items, as any one item would do. It would act as if it will not be receiving back your item, but you would actually be rewarded back the item and a duplicate of it.
In other words, while any items such as rotten food would do, is best to put in some thoughts before submission. We recommend duplicating something useful and rare such as a Portcrystal for example.
Reward: An additional copy of your submitted item
Riddle of Rumination
“It’s ever the first we keep fond in our breast, and ever the first that eclipses the rest. You know of the Seeker’s Tokens, I trust? Those keepsakes of a fondly remembered journey? Yet where was it that you found your first? Retrace your steps, if you can – you might make a new discovery. Seven days, shall we say, ere you return? May your journey be a pleasant one.”
This riddle is one of the trickiest because it is all about the test for your memory. Funnily, it is also the most straightforward puzzle the Sphinx gives you.
To complete the Riddle of Rumination, simply retrace your steps and revisit the spot where you found your first Seeker’s Token, and you will find a Finder’s Token there. Retrieve it and bring it to the Sphinx, but don’t go hanging around and procrastinating because you are only given 7 days to complete this challenge.
We do hope you remember where you found your first Seeker’s Token as everyone’s experience is different.
Reward: Ferrystone x3
Sphinx’s Second Location
Once you have completed the first set of riddles, the Sphinx will congratulate you and fly off to its next location. It is possible to climb onto the Sphinx and ride it to the next destination, but do make sure to remember to collect your reward, which is the fifth treasure chest.
If you did not latch yourself onto the Sphinx, then to find it the second time, head over to the Frontier Shrine. To find the place, start your journey from the east entrance of Checkpoint Rest Town, take a few steps and you will notice a riverside by your right. Walk to the wooden bridge and jump off, then follow along the river and the route will lead to a cave. Stick to the right side and climb the ledges, then just follow along the path.
You will eventually arrive at an area blasting with rain and home to some powerful enemies such as a rampaging Minotaur and a Chimera. You could either have an all-out brawl with the beasts or head up a ruin by the left and you will notice a breakable boulder below a slanted pillar. Shatter it and climb through, then follow along the path and you will see the Sphinx waiting for you on the far end.
Riddle of Reunion
Surprise! This riddle is automatically solved the moment you meet and talked the Sphinx at its second domain. Yes, do keep a count because this is considered a riddle despite the chest straight-up unsealed and the Sphinx giving no vague phrases.
Reward: 100,000 Gold
Important Notes for the Next Set of Riddles
Before proceeding with the next few riddles, it is worth noting that this time you do not get to choose the puzzle to solve. Instead, the riddles will be given out in random order, so pay attention to what the Sphinx has to say.
I will list the riddles in the orders that they are given to me, but if you notice a different order. Simply scroll down and find your answers.
Do place a Portcrystal nearby because you will be traveling to multiple places and back. Lastly, it is best to rest at an inn before proceeding with each riddle in case of messing it all up! So, if things go south, at least you could reload a save and reattempt the riddle.
Riddle of Recollection
“Now, questions beget questions, and I have one for you. How many riddles have you solved thus far? My memory fails me, you see. Remind me, and make it plain. Let yonder statues be your means. For every question aptly answered, bring one here before me.”
Remember when I said to keep count of the number of riddles solved as you meet the Sphinx at its second lair? This is exactly why! Do not let it deceive you because the moment the first chest unsealed at the second Sphinx lair, it counts as solving a riddle. So, at the minimum, you should have solved 6 riddles, then add on other riddles that you have solved if Riddle of Recollection shows up much later for you.
For this, the Sphinx will point towards some statues by the far left of the shrine. Simply carry the number of statues based on how many riddles you have solved so far to the pedestal in front of the Sphinx.
If you cannot remember or lost count, you can either look at the treasure chests you have unsealed thus far or at the Sphinx’s wings, because a neat detail is that its wings will have spots glowing based on the number of riddles solved.
Reward: Unmaking Arrow (Important! Do not use it because you will need it to complete the Sphinx’s quest line)
Riddle of Differentiation
“So vast is the world, and full of life; you are but one of many. Indeed, in the grand scheme, we are as distinct from one another as pebbles on a beach – yet we do so love to extol our differences. But are these differences so great? If you believe so, this next task should prove exceedingly simple. I seek this man. If men are so distinct, I’m sure you’ll find him in a trice.”
A Devil May Cry reference?! Yes, the Sphinx will show you a quick image of an NPC you would need to bring to it. The catch is that there are two NPCs that look almost identical to one another and they are Dante and Vergil. You will be shown either one and you have to bring the correct one.
Since the image shown is quick to vanish, we recommend taking a snap for reference. The easiest identifiable feature of Dante and Vergil is the hair. Dante has straight hair with bangs on his right, while Vergil’s hair has mild curls and bangs on his left.
To find them, head over to the Checkpoint Rest Town. Dante will be walking around the Vermund side of the town, sometimes around the tavern and sometimes near the iron gate. As for Vergil, he can be found at the Battahl side of the town, past the gate, and often time wandering around near the inn.
There are multiple ways to bring them back to the Sphinx. You can carry them, which is rather tedious. You could capture them into the Sealing Phial that you have obtained after solving the Riddle of Eyes. Or the easiest method, grab and carry the NPC on your shoulder, use a Ferrystone, and teleport to the Portcrystal we advised you to place before the Frontier Shrine, if you even heeded our advice.
Like the previous riddles, just place the target NPC on the stand and talk to the Sphinx.
Reward: Whimsical Daydream, a censer weapon for the Trickster vocation.
Riddle of Futility
“How easily the mind unravels! Some say it’s pain that does it best, others darkness – but I say neither. Rather, I say a mind cannot be more soundly broken than when it beholds its earnest efforts laid low in a single stroke. Could your survive such despair? We shall see. Here I have an amphora destine for Ser Maurits in Battahl. Deliver it to him, but beware; it’s rather fragile.”
Work smarter, not harder. This riddle will have you carry an extremely fragile amphora to an NPC named Maurits at Mural Byway of Bakbattahl. You could carry the vase and slowly make your way over to the place, or… just bring Maurits to the amphora instead.
Again, make sure you have a Portcrystal placed nearby. Travel to the Mural Byway, which is west of the Residential Ward and above a purchasable player home in Bakbatthal. Maurits should be standing beside a large mural of the Sphinx. Talk to the man and “kidnap” him with a Sealing Phial or simply use the Ferrystone trick to bring him to the amphora.
Carry him to the amphora and drop him nearby. Do not drop it on top of the amphora, I repeat! After that, a dialogue by Maurits should play by itself and the Sphinx will congratulate you.
Reward: Eternal Bond, a ring that you can offer to a character to deepen your bond with them.
Riddle of Contest
“Though ours is a battle of wits, tests of mettle are more to your strength. Is that not so? Come, try your arm – though he shall be your opponent, not I. However, I am not one to be amused by a simple duel. Bear this ring into battle, that I might gauge your true strength.”
Get prepared for a fight because this riddle will have the Sphinx proposing you to duel an NPC that she spawned. The catch is that you will be deeply disadvantaged as you will be forced to equip the Ring of Derision, which will basically render you extremely weak and deal almost no damage.
It is called a riddle for a reason as you are asked to figure out ways to defeat your opponent. Here is a tip, just fight aggressively; of course, make sure to heal up if you take up enough hits. Then, once the opponent is staggered, run up to them, grab them, rush to the cliff edge by the right of the shrine, and toss them down like what TEKKEN’s Mishima family did to each other.
Reward: The Ring of Ambition, a trinket that boosts EXP gained from defeating enemies.
The Final Puzzle
Important: Before talking to the Sphinx after solving your tenth riddle, make sure you go back and rest at an inn because you might fail if you are not ready or you miss the shot.
Switch to the Archer vocation, because you would need the Unmaking Arrow that you earned from solving the Riddle of Recollection. This arrow will immediately save your game upon firing, so if you missed the shot, the only way to restart the challenge is by reloading an “inn save”.
The final riddle is to defeat the Sphinx because the moment you finish talking to it, it will fly away leaving the last chest inaccessible. So, as the Sphinx is about to take flight, quickly attacks it a few times until it is angered and starts retaliating. Remember, you only have a small window to keep it around, and even when you are fighting it, you may not win as it will flee after a while if you can’t deal enough damage.
When its health bar is visible, equip the Unmaking Arrow from your inventory and shoot to its wings. The Sphinx will then be slayed and reappear in spirit form for a short conversation before dropping a few items, and one of them is the Key of Sagacity for the large golden chest.
Okay! Let’s say you want to duel the Sphinx in a fair fight without using Unmaking Arrow to one-shot it. The Sphinx battle is a riddle on its own… actually, it is just about knowing its weak points, which is to target the non-human parts such as the wings. Make sure you can deal good damage first, as it is a DPS check and the Sphinx will leave if you can’t deal enough damage.
Reward: Eternal Wakestone (Despite its name, this item can only be used once but revives multiple dead NPCs at once rather than one like regular Wakestone. Keep this safe, in case you got a Dragonsplague epidemic on the loose.)
That is all the solutions to the Sphinx’s riddles in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and best of luck solving them. “But what if we did a step wrong and failed a riddle?” you may ask. Well, you will not be killed instantly like what would happen in the mythology, but sadly you will be forfeiting the scrumptious reward as well as the opportunity to earn an achievement/trophy.
There is only one attempt per riddle, which is why you need to be careful in your decision as well as managing your save, since there are only one save and autosave clocks in very often. This is why it is important to rest at an inn before attempting to solve a riddle, so you always have a way to reload in case of failure. Good luck, have fun.
