Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has taken the gaming world by storm since its release, quickly establishing itself as one of 2025’s standout titles. The game’s innovative approach to turn-based combat has drawn in players from across the spectrum, including those who typically avoid the genre altogether. As you prepare to embark on your epic journey across The Continent, understanding which characters deserve a spot in your limited three-member active party can make all the difference between triumph and frustration.

Each character in Clair Obscur brings their own unique playstyle, mechanics, and narrative significance. Some will accompany you for extended periods, while others make briefer appearances. This comprehensive tier list breaks down each party member’s strengths, weaknesses, and potential, helping you make informed decisions about your team composition. Consider this your essential guard against making poor party choices that could leave you struggling through challenging encounters.

[GUIDE] Illusion Connect: Re Tier List

Warning: This guide contains major spoilers, particularly for those who haven’t yet explored beyond the Stone Wave Cliffs region.

      6. Gustave

Despite being the protagonist, Gustave unfortunately ranks at the bottom of our tier list. His limited screen time is the primary culprit, as his role eventually transfers to Verso. However, don’t mistake his low ranking for weakness. Gustave has one of the simplest playstyles and setups in the game, focusing primarily on filling his Overcharge bar and unleashing massive damage attacks. You can build Overcharge through standard attacks, successful parries, or dodges, but the most efficient method is landing perfect chains of the Lumiere Assault attack. For the early portions of your adventure, Gustave proves quite reliable, but his premature departure prevents him from reaching his full potential compared to other, more permanent party members.

      5. Monoco

As the sole non-human party member from the Gestral race, Monoco offers unique gameplay possibilities that unfortunately fall short in practice. Despite his interesting concept, Monoco joins too late in the game and doesn’t get sufficient time to develop. Unlocking his full potential requires considerable investment, as his shapeshifting ability into Nevron only activates after defeating enemies with specific symbols while he’s in your active party. Further complicating matters, Monoco joins at a lower level than your other characters, necessitating additional grinding. His core Bestial Wheel mechanic adds another layer of complexity, requiring careful AP management and precise timing to align skills with the appropriate buffs. While conceptually fascinating, these high barriers to entry make Monoco difficult to justify in your main party.

      4. Lune

Lune represents a significant step up from the bottom tiers in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, offering reliable support throughout much of the game along with decent damage-dealing capabilities. She serves as a dependable main support character for a substantial portion of the adventure while still functioning as a respectable damage dealer, especially when consistently triggering her Mayhem skill. What holds Lune back is her Elemental Stains mechanic, which demands a more complicated and time-consuming setup compared to other characters. To maximize her damage output, you’ll need to carefully combine various skills to generate these Stains. Unfortunately, her support responsibilities often consume turns that could otherwise be used for damage setup. While she builds up damage more slowly than characters like Gustave, her extended presence in the story and gradual development potential earn her this mid-tier placement.

      3. Maelle

Despite being the youngest party member, Maelle secures her high-tier status through her engaging playstyle and exceptional DPS potential. Her combat revolves around a Stance system that allows her to prioritize offense, defense, or a balance between the two. These stances significantly alter how her skills function, creating a system that rewards mastery with devastating results. Once you become comfortable with Maelle’s rhythm, she becomes incredibly difficult to replace in your main team. She excels at inflicting some of the most brutal Burn status damage in the game, making her particularly effective against numerous enemies and boss encounters. Her primary weakness lies in her specialized focus on damage and debuffs, offering little in terms of essential support abilities. Additionally, her Stance mechanic requires thoughtful management, especially during battles where tactical requirements shift dramatically from turn to turn.

      2. Sciel

Narrowly missing the top spot, Sciel offers game-breaking potential through her complex but immensely powerful Foretell mechanic. This system allows her to apply special “cards” to enemies, up to 10 per target under normal circumstances. Some of her abilities apply Foretell (triggering Sun Charge), while others consume it (triggering Moon Charge), each producing distinct effects. The real magic happens when you effectively combine both skill types, unlocking the Twilight phase that increases Foretell limits to 20 per enemy and dramatically boosts damage output. While her setup can be truly game-changing, you’ll need to constantly adapt your approach to maintain efficiency across different encounters. Beyond her offensive capabilities, Sciel also provides powerful buffs that solidify her role as both a damage dealer and support character. Her placement just below the top tier reflects the higher skill ceiling required to unlock her full potential.

      1. Verso

Taking the crown as the most powerful playable character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Verso eventually replaces Gustave as the protagonist, essentially functioning as an enhanced version of his predecessor. Sharing a similar weapon type and some skills, Verso’s unique Perfection mechanic sets him apart. This system gradually increases his rank from D to S, with higher ranks substantially boosting his combat effectiveness. True to its name, Perfection demands precision, as missed dodges or parries will decrease your hard-earned rank. However, once mastered, Verso becomes an absolute powerhouse, particularly shining in prolonged battles where he can reach and maintain his peak performance. His versatility across various combat scenarios, combined with his relatively approachable yet rewarding mechanic, cement his position at the top of our tier list.

      Conclusion

While building your party in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, consider not only each character’s raw power but also how their mechanics align with your personal playstyle. Some players might find Sciel’s complex systems more rewarding than Verso’s more straightforward approach, despite the ranking difference. The beauty of the game lies in its balance—each character offers unique strategic possibilities that can complement different approaches to combat. Experiment with various combinations to discover which party members best suit your preferred tactics as you journey across The Continent, facing increasingly challenging encounters that will test both your understanding of these characters and your mastery of their distinctive mechanics.
