Gloom and Doom, a visual novel inspired by the slacker movies of the 90s (but with wraiths and demons), will launch on 18th January 2021.
Developed and published by Singaporean indie studio Neo Tegoel Games, the visual novel will be available on Steam for PC and Mac. Currently, a console version is in the works and will be published by Viridian Studios in the middle of this year.
Featuring scratchy, hand-drawn visuals reminiscent of old comic books, Gloom and Doom tells the story of a Wraith eager to enter Heaven by killing demons and a girl who is convinced that she will bring about the apocalypse. The fates of these two characters intertwine as they meet a colourful cast of characters in New Atlantis. As a throwback to 90s slacker movies, players can instantly feel its quirky, outcast vibe.
For the uninitiated, the slacker genre is a genre of film that was massively popular during the mid-90s. Slacker films typically feature youths and teens who are doing nothing with their lives, hence the term. A famous example of a slacker film is Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure.
Gloom and Doom features:
-
A quirky tone reminiscent of 90s slacker and social outcast movies like Reality Bites,Clerks, Edward Scissorhands, and Before Sunrise – complete with cynical characters, solitary urban environments, and stinging sarcastic retorts.
-
A nostalgia trip to the 90s, with 16-bit games, CRT monitors, and the Britney/Christinarivalry.
-
Unique characters like a skateboarding angel, a demon girl-next-door best friend, and anexploitative archangel that echoes bad bosses everywhere.
-
A colourful visual style inspired by 90s spandex superhero comics – complete with thickoutlines and solid black inking.
-
7 different endings to uncover where players can save the world from a demonapocalypse or save Wynona’s soul.
