Sony’s State of Play showcase on September 24th delivered some exciting news for fans of the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima – a full-fledged sequel is in development. Titled Ghost of Yotei, the new game is being developed by Sucker Punch Productions and is slated to launch in 2025 for the PlayStation 5.
Ghost of Yotei will shift the setting away from the island of Tsushima, instead taking place in the lands surrounding Mount Yotei in the region of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido), over 300 years after the events of the first game. Players will take on the role of a new protagonist, Atsu, who dons the Ghost mask and uncovers a fresh legend to unfold.
Sucker Punch noted that while the core pillars of the Ghost of Tsushima experience will remain – such as playing as a wandering warrior in feudal Japan and offering freedom to explore at your own pace – the team is looking to innovate and create something “fresh but familiar.” This includes introducing new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapon types.
Sucker Punch is building Ghost of Yotei from the ground up for the PlayStation 5, allowing them to further enhance the immersive environments players will traverse. The developers promise several improvements, including enhanced draw distances, more detailed weather and environmental effects, and stunning vistas overlooking the snowy landscapes of Ezo.
Ghost of Tsushima was one of Sony’s fastest-selling new IPs when it launched in 2020, and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies globally. With the massive success of the original and the promising enhancements showcased for the sequel, Ghost of Yotei is shaping up to be an exciting next chapter in the saga.
