Garena Free Fire, Garena’s own Battle Royale shooter, has overtaken PUBG Mobile as the most profitable mobile shooter in the US Market.
According to statistics website Sensor Tower, Garena Free Fire made USD 100 Million in the first quarter of 2021 (1Q21), putting it above PUBG Mobile and its USD 68 Million revenue. In third place was Call of Duty Mobile, not too far behind PUBG Mobile with USD 62 Million in revenue.
While it may have beaten out PUBG mobile in the US market, the same story isn’t true globally. Sensor Tower’s report states that PUBG still holds the crown for global revenue, raking in USD 744.4 Million compared to Garena Free Fire’s USD 254.6 Million. What this means is that Free Fire is starting to get more of a foothold in the US, but ultimately PUBG Mobile is still the much more dominant game, especially looking at the gap between the two.
While the Battle Royale mobile market is definitely much larger now than it was when it first started, the genre is only trending upwards in profitability. Sensor Tower says overall, Battle Royale games made USD 1.3 billion in 1Q21, growing a whole 16.6% year-on-year. What this means is that unlike what some people may think, rumors of the Battle Royale genre’s overcrowding were greatly exaggerated, with many still sticking to the most popular ones.
