During gamescom asia 2024, we had the opportunity to try several upcoming indie titles that showcase the diversity and innovation in the independent gaming scene. In a significant partnership between Gamescom Asia and Indie Wavemakers, an initiative by GameStart Asia, independent developers found an enhanced platform to showcase their creative ventures. This collaboration has transformed the event’s Indie Village into a comprehensive showcase opportunity for both local and international developers.
During our visit to this evolving indie gaming hub at gamescom asia 2024, we had the opportunity to experience several standout titles. Here’s our hands-on experience with five notable games:
Steel Seed
This stealth action-adventure brings a fresh take to the sci-fi genre. Set in a dark world where humanity faces extinction, Steel Seed features protagonist Zoe and her small robot companion. While drawing comparisons to Stellar Blade, it carves its own path with robust stealth mechanics. Players can utilize sci-fi grass as hiding spots for assassinations and use cover mechanics to attract enemies with noise. Our 20-minute demo revealed impressive graphics and gameplay for an indie title, with stealth elements being particularly well-implemented.
The cover system goes beyond typical implementations, allowing players to manipulate enemy behavior through sound tactics. What’s particularly impressive for an indie title is the seamless integration of high-quality graphics with responsive gameplay mechanics. Our 20-minute playthrough demonstrated that Steel Seed’s stealth elements aren’t merely additional features but core components that enhance the overall gaming experience.
Awaken Astral Blade
Coming October 22 as part of PlayStation’s China Hero Project, this 2D Souls-like Metroidvania combines fairy-tale aesthetics with sci-fi action. The demo showcased intricate level design and challenging boss encounters. Playing on normal difficulty (with story and hardcore modes also available), we found the combat demanding yet fair. Boss battles require precise dodging and targeting specific weak points, while a currency system enables skill acquisition. The game limits healing options to three potions, adding to the strategic depth.
The game offers three difficulty settings – story, normal, and hardcore – though even the normal mode provides a substantial challenge. The combat system demands precision, with boss battles requiring careful timing of dodges and strategic targeting of weak points. A thoughtfully implemented currency system allows players to acquire new skills, while the three-potion limit adds an extra layer of resource management. The Metroidvania-style map design encourages exploration and grinding for levels before tackling formidable boss encounters.
Island of Winds
This unique adventure game takes a refreshing non-violent approach to fantasy exploration. The demo highlighted early-game mechanics, including puzzle-solving, spellcasting, and empathy-based encounters. Players can purify spider-like enemies using magical abilities, with various obstacles requiring different spells to progress. The game’s peaceful environment encourages exploration and discovery.

Shape of Dreams
Blending rogue-lite action with MOBA elements, Shape of Dreams offers both solo and 4-player co-op experiences. The demo featured multiple character options, including a gunslinger and knight, demonstrating varied playstyles. While weapons remain fixed, players can customize their approach through a MOBA-style skill system with four modifiable skill slots. The game includes shops for skill trading, adding depth to the traditional rogue-lite formula.
