Following the conclusion of gamescom asia 2024, the event has celebrated unprecedented attendance and key milestones for the Southeast Asian gaming industry. Additionally, the event showcased 177 exhibitors and country pavilions, compared to 136 last year.
With its emphasis on bridging the global video games industry with Southeast Asia’s growing market, gamescom asia has firmly positioned itself as the region’s foremost gaming business and consumer event. Furthermore, the festival welcomed over 4,439 business visitors and featured engaging discussions led by more than 80 speakers, all within 10,000 square meters of exhibition space that highlighted over 120 games, making it a pivotal gathering for both gaming enthusiasts and industry professionals.
Southeast Asia’s Expanding Role in the Global Gaming Industry
Business Area Amplifies Industry Engagement and Innovation
At this year’s gamescom asia, influential figures from the gaming industry gathered to share their insights on game development, business strategies, and the creative processes behind successful titles. This year’s business area experienced remarkable growth, marked by increased international participation from countries such as Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, and the US. With over 4,400 business visitors, it became the largest assembly of video game professionals in Southeast Asia.
The business area featured notable guests, including former PlayStation Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden, among others. A key highlight was Shawn Layden’s fireside chat, where he offered valuable insights into the future of gaming. He emphasized the importance of innovation and cross-platform integration, while also advocating for stronger connections with gaming communities. His remarks struck a chord with industry leaders aiming to navigate the swiftly changing gaming landscape.
“If we can just get a bit more interest and excitement and exposure for these lower budget, but super creative and super unusual kind of games, I would like to see more of that. Because if we’re just going to rely on the blockbusters to get us through, I think that’s a death sentence for the [gaming] business,” said Shawn Layden.
Entertainment Area Delights Fans with Exclusive Showcases and Live Experiences
Throughout the weekend, the entertainment area attracted tens of thousands of enthusiastic gamers. Capcom’s return was a highlight, featuring an expansive 1,000 sqm booth where fans had the opportunity to enjoy exclusive hands-on demos of upcoming titles. The CAPCOM Pro Tour 2024 SUPER PREMIER SINGAPORE captivated spectators with intense Street Fighter 6 matches, culminating in Shuto from Crazy Raccoon defeating 15 competitors to claim victory, earning US$10,000 in prize money and a coveted spot in the global CAPCOM Cup 11.
Additionally, fans were treated to an exclusive first look at Monster Hunter Wilds during a special “Let’s Play” segment, where Ryozo Tsujimoto, Producer of Monster Hunter Wilds, teased new features that left the audience eagerly anticipating the game’s release.
Attendees also had the chance to test new and unreleased games from both major publishers and indie studios. The expanded indie area, created in collaboration with Indie Wavemakers, showcased over 60 innovative titles from independent developers around the world. This setup not only provided indie developers with valuable exposure to larger audiences but also allowed gamers to enjoy fresh experiences with a variety of unique game types.
