We got to try out Trueworld Games’s Unyielder ahead of its release at the Indie Wavemakers booth during gamescom asia 2023.
Unyielder is a fast-paced first-person shooter similar to Superkill, which relies on skills instead of luck. The demo we tried placed a heavy focus on the boss battles of the game.
One thing that immediately stood out to us was the movement in the game. The variety of movement options, such as double jumps, dodges, and grappling hooks, made the movement feel really smooth and satisfying to traverse around.
There are also several features that enhance the gameplay, such as the counter, which is indicated enemy by an enemy glowing, whereby shooting them will stun them.
The bosses also have different phases, where players would need to destroy an armour bar before being able to hit the HP bar, with both bars containing different movesets and phases. Bossfights are meant to be a big chunk of your time, so the changing phases keep it from feeling repetitive.
After destroying the armour, you can perform finisher like in Doom to get ammo, and killing enemies lets players choose between 3 skills similar to a roguelite.
The gameplay consists of trying to avoid enemy’s attacks by jumping from platform to platform, and finding a vantage point to strike the enemies down, whilst switching between weapons that best fits the situation. We got to try out many of the weapons which suit a variety of gameplay styles, but we would like to see the inclusion of melee weapons in the future.
The game was really fun and well made. However, the enemy AI is a little inconsistent and could use a little polishing.
Unyielder is scheduled to be released in 2024 on Steam.
