gamescom Opening Night Live featured new gameplay for Mortal Kombat 1 today, introducing the iconic villain Shao Kahn and several other important story characters to the roster.
Considering Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a rebooted timeline, the trailer shows how much things have changed in Liu Kang’s new world- Shao Kahn here is called General Shao, serving under Queen Sindel.
Similarly, the story also shows Raiden and Liu Kang in new roles, with the two characters almost switching places compared to their original incarnations.
As with the rest of the cast, all three of the characters sport new fighting styles to suit Mortal Kombat 1’s reworked gameplay– Shao Kahn’s gameplay revolves around being able to set his battle axe and then interact with it while its set, while Sindel sports a more mixup-heavy gameplan with hovers and delay options.
Meanwhile, Raiden sports a more all-rounded playstyle, with the ability to charge a flurry of projectiles to overwhelm opponents while also having close-range options.
Aside from the three main characters, two more Kameo fighters were also shown off: Motaro and Shujinko.
Motaro in particular has a new trait for a Kameo fighter, being able to reflect projectiles with one of his assist moves.
Mortal Kombat 1 releases on September 19th.
