It’s the end of the year, and that means it’s time for our apps to tattle on us for our habits, with Spotify leading the charge.
Spotify has spent the past week letting users access their Spotify 2020 Wrapped statistics, where the popular music streaming app shares insights into individual users listening habits.
However, Spotify has also contextualized some of its data, telling us how gamers have been interacting with the app. According to Spotify, there was a 55% global gaming increase in users streaming the app from their home consoles.
In Malaysia alone, this number shot up by 63%. Some of the most popular tracks streamed on these consoles were Trevor Daniel’s “Falling”, followed by Powfu and beabadoobee’s “death bed (coffee for your head)” and Roddy Ricch’s “The Box”.
Of course, they wouldn’t be gamers if there weren’t a few gaming tracks in there as well. Spotify has had an ever-expanding list of game soundtracks available to stream on its library, and they’ve taken note of what people like the most.
While you’d think that gamers would be listening to music from the most recent games, the reverse is true. According to Spotify’s data, the most streamed videogame music was C418’s “Minecraft- Volume Beta”, consisting of instrumental tracks used in the decade-old game.
Not far behind Minecraft was Mick Gordon’s OST for Doom 2016, full of Metal and Djent to rip and tear to. Right behind that was Death Stranding: Timefall, a collection of music by various artists about the surprisingly prophetic Death Stranding.
The increase in Console streaming is self-explanatory. As more people spent more time indoors this year, it’s easy to assume that people would rather stream music on their consoles with integrated apps rather than have their phones blasting music while they play.
It’s also great that Spotify has categorized video game music as it’s own list, because many games go above and beyond with their music to be more than just the sounds that play as you farm useless loot. Those with music that can stand on its own definitely deserve the recognition, even if they weren’t pushing the same numbers as Billie Eilish.
