Well the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3 has been canceled once again, after being canceled in 2020 and only having a smaller online event in 2021. They promise it’ll come back bigger and bolder than ever in 2023 but that doesn’t change the fact that E3 is out again for another year.
The only adds further fuel to a fire that has been burning for years at this point: do we need E3.
When the expo started in the early 90s, it was an exciting event. All the big video game companies coming together to present the latest gaming news and projects. Some of the most hype moments in gaming happened at E3 and some of the most competitive parts of each console war, like the very first conference in 1995 where Sony destroyed Sega with the simple whisper of “$299” or Nintendo’s 2007 presentation when Reggie Fils-Amie first declared his body was ready.
However, in the digital age, the need for E3 has been questioned. Starting in 2012, Nintendo stopped doing E3’s in-person press conferences in favor of doing “Nintendo Directs‘ where they would stream their latest announcements and do so several times a year, even apart from E3. Other notable companies have followed suit such as Playstation’s State of Play streams. What does this mean for the Electronic Expo? Find out by signing up for our newsletter below (it’s free):
