“The MMORPG genre is dying”—this line is common in discussions on the genre, but with FFXIV being so successful, has the sentiment changed? In our 23rd issue of the GamerBraves Newsletter, we’ll evaluate the MMORPG genre as a whole and compare it to the success currently being enjoyed by FFXIV.
In case you’re out of the loop, FFXIV has been doing better than ever. Not only has the game overtaken World of Warcraft in terms of player count with the release of its Endwalker expansion, Square Enix literally had to stop selling the game. Server queues and the wait time to enter the game was unprecedentedly long, so much so that Square Enix had to stop new players from getting the game in order to temporarily alleviate the problem.
Even though FFXIV has overtaken WoW, the latter is far from dead, still enjoying a healthy player count. That being said, the vast majority of MMORPGs are in decline. There are also fewer MMORPGs released every year compared to just about any other video game genre, despite how online gaming as a whole has become more popular than ever.
