We’re back with yet another card preview, this time for the wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey Frost Fair Lure Fish in the upcoming Magic: The Gathering (MTG) Doctor Who set, courtesy of our Companions at Wizards of the Coast.
Fans may remember the Lure Fish from the episode Thin Ice, living in the frozen River Thames during the Frost Fair with their creepy green glow.
In a similar fashion to their on-screen counterparts, the MTG Frost Fair Lure Fish provides a good way to pressure your opponent off of one card, as befitting of a blue/red creature.
The effect of the card is as follows:
When Frost Fair Lure Fish enters the battlefield, create two 1/1 blue fish creature tokens and two tapped Treasure tokens.
Fish you control have haste and can’t be blocked by Humans.
Foretell 3[B][R]
Admittedly, the inability to be blocked by humans feels more like a flavor thing than an actual use for the card- even if you were somehow counter-picking someone’s Human Tribal deck it’d probably feel weird seeing the Lure Fish as the missing piece of your killing blow.
That being said, it’s the Foretell ability that makes this card a decent pick- Foretell allows you to exile it face-down for 2 mana, only to have it appear at a later time of your choice by paying the discounted cost.
While it blanket hastening of Fish may be good, there’s few cards to actually synergize off it for now- its main function is to use the Fish Tokens and itself, allowing you to have three attacking creatures on the same turn.
It should be noted that Frost Fair Lure Fish is part of the Paradox Power Commander deck- so its Foretell ability actually synergizes with the Thirteenth Doctor’s Paradox ability, giving the Lure Fish an extra +1/+1 counter when you cast it this way.
Similarly, the Thirteenth Doctor’s other ability means the Lure Fish will also still be eligible to block after your fishy assault, making a solid addition to your lineup.
If you’re using it in your own commander deck, it’ll admittedly take some cooking to make use of its full abilities- its best synergy would be with Fleet Swallower, who would be greatly improved with Haste to force more milling.
Frost Fair Lure Fish will be part of the MTG Doctor Who set, as part of the previously mentioned Paradox Power deck. The set launches October 13th, so don’t forget to pick it up if you’re looking for the savior of Fish Tribal decks or just interested in seeing a deck powered by the Thirteenth Doctor.
