Bandai Namco and developer Dimps have officially announced Freedom Wars Remastered, a revamped version of the 2014 PS Vita action RPG. This remastered edition, which includes all previously released downloadable content, is set to launch on January 9, 2025, in Japan and January 10 worldwide for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.
Freedom Wars takes place in a dystopian future where humanity resides in prison complexes called Panopticons. Players, deemed “Sinners,” must participate in dangerous combat operations to compete for dwindling resources and seek their freedom.
The remastered version boasts several key features, including deep character customization options and an elevated gaming experience. Players can expect 4K resolution, upgraded textures, and 60 frames per second performance on PlayStation and PC platforms. The game also introduces an overhauled weapon crafting system, additional difficulty settings, and various gameplay upgrades.
In addition, one of the game’s highlights is its coop mode, allowing up to eight players to join forces in rescuing citizens and battling massive Abductors in fast-paced missions. In an interview with PlayStation Blog Japan, Takashi Tsukamoto, the original game’s director and development producer for the remaster, explained that the team had long desired to create a sequel. Furthermore, the 10th anniversary of the original release provided the perfect opportunity to revisit the game.
Interestingly, while Sony Interactive Entertainment published the original Freedom Wars, Bandai Namco is publishing the remastered version. Tsukamoto clarified that Dimps received the license from Sony to create the remaster, and Bandai Namco offered to publish the title.
