Sohei Niikawa, who led Nippon Ichi Software for 13 years, has founded a new company called SuperNiche with a mission to champion creative freedom in Japan’s development community. The venture will focus on enabling creators to fully express their individuality and passion across multiple media formats.
Despite currently operating as a one-person company, SuperNiche is already involved in several projects under its “Creators First” management philosophy. The company plans to work across games, novels, manga, music, and video production. SuperNiche has announced its first project, serving as producer for Etrange Overlord, a work written by novelist Roman Kitayama.
Future announcements regarding entertainment content handled by SuperNiche will be made through the company’s official website and Niikawa’s personal Twitter account.

Niikawa’s industry credentials are substantial, having spent 26 years at Nippon Ichi Software before retiring in August 2022. During his career, he contributed to numerous acclaimed titles including the Disgaea series, La Pucelle: Tactics, Phantom Brave, and the Rhapsody trilogy. His work spans from 1998’s Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure through to 2021’s Disgaea 6.
Moreover, the formation of SuperNiche signals a new chapter for the veteran game developer as he pursues his vision of improving Japan’s creative development environment. With his extensive experience in developing cult classics and maintaining long-running series, Niikawa’s new venture represents a potentially significant addition to Japan’s independent development scene.
