A former Grand Theft Auto (GTA) dev has shared his thoughts on the highly anticipated sequel GTA 6, suggesting that fans might want to moderate their expectations for groundbreaking changes. The Grand Theft Auto franchise, is set to release its first main series entry in over a decade with the upcoming GTA 6. The anticipation for this title reached new heights in December 2023 when Rockstar Games, the series’ publisher, unveiled the game’s debut trailer accumulating an astounding 200 million views on YouTube.
Obbe Vermeij, who previously worked on several GTA titles including San Andreas and GTA 4, recently spoke with SanInPlay about the upcoming installment in the popular franchise. Vermeij expressed his belief that GTA 6 may not be “wildly different” from its predecessor, GTA 5.
The ex-Rockstar North employee attributed this perspective to the relatively modest increase in hardware capabilities between console generations. He noted that while the transition from PlayStation 1 to PlayStation 2 was “enormous,” the shift from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5 was “not that big.” Vermeij commented that developers lack the significant “technology jump” necessary to make the game radically “different and better.”
Despite these observations, Vermeij maintained a positive outlook on GTA 6. He acknowledged that Rockstar Games has likely “taken it even further” with the new title and expressed confidence that it will still be “the best game out there.” Commenting on the game’s debut trailer, Vermeij highlighted a scene featuring a beach populated with numerous characters engaged in various activities as particularly impressive as the game’s return to the Miami-inspired setting of Vice City, praising its “Miami vibe.”
GTA 6 is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a projected release in 2025.
