Famed Final Fantasy producer-director Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P among fans, believes Final Fantasy Tactics deserves a new entry.
In an interview with TheGamer, the producer-director behind Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI said that “probably about time” for a new Final Fantasy Tactics game.
“We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team,” Yoshi-P said in the interview. “We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one.”
Despite being a critically acclaimed series, it has been 17 years since Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.
As the name implies, this series is unlike traditional Final Fantasy games and instead is a tactical RPG with tile-based combat and diverse classes.
However, while the producer-director expressed seeing storytelling potential in another Tactics game, he along with director Takeo Kujiraoka and localization lead Michael-Christoper Koji Fox clarified that Final Fantasy XVI would not be a good fit as a template for a Final Fantasy Tactics entry.
“What would we even call it?” said Fox, “Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot.”
At the moment, Yoshi-P is hard at work on the next expansion titled “Dawntrail” for the highly successful MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV, which is slated to be released in early access on June 28th, 2024, and a full release on July 2nd, 2024.
The expansion was initially planned to be in early access a week earlier, but Yoshi-P jokingly stated that fans would probably be interested in playing the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC of Elden Ring, thus pushed back by a week.
Recently, Yoshi-P also revealed that the highly anticipated PC version of Final Fantasy XVI is currently in the “final stages of optimization” in an interview and a demo is planned.
