According to Exputer forums, Square Enix and Tencent are reportedly working on a mobile version for the critically acclaimed MMO – Final Fantasy XIV. This would increase the number of platforms the game is on from 7 to 8. Final Fantasy XIV Online is available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Windows, Mac and Steam.
The latest expansion to the game titled “Dawntrail” was released on July 2, 2024 and is available now on all platforms. The early access of the expansion was pushed back as Director Naoki Yoshida jokingly mentioned another title’s DLC release hindered him from doing so.
It was reported that back in 2018, Square Enix and Tencent had form a strategic alliance, and in 2021, Yosuke Matsuda, then President of Square Enix, confirmed that some projects were underway. None of the projects have been officially revealed as of now.
The development of a mobile version of NieR was reportedly cancelled by Tencent earlier this year. It was axed as the developers could not find a suitable monetization model for the game given its high development cost and franchise rights.
If there was a mobile port for Final Fantasy XIV Online being developed right now, how will the buttons be laid out? As an MMORPG, it has an intricate control system that could be difficult to adapt for touchscreen interfaces. How that issue will be resolved remains to be seen.
