The launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a much anticipated one, but there was unfortunately a printing error on the game discs released on launch day.
As revealed, the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth physical version, which comprises two discs, had their labels accidentally swapped due to a manufacturing error from Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Now, every physical edition released on launch day would have its Data Disc erroneously labeled as the “Play Disc”, while every Play Disc is misprinted as “Data Disc”.
Square Enix issued a public statement apologizing for the inconvenience and assured that the error will not affect players’ ability to play the game.
How to Rectify the Issue
The publisher also released instructions guiding players to circumvent the issue and allowing players to play Final Fantasy VII Rebirth without issue.
- Insert the black disc (marked as “Play Disc”) into your PlayStation 5 and install the requisite data.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Once the installation is complete, insert the white disc (marked “Data Disc”) to start the game.
After the initial installations, players will only ever need to use the white disc labeled “Data Disc” to play the game.
Essentially, due to mislabeling, you would need to insert Play Disc to install, and Data Disc to play instead.
It was also noted that Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently investigating the cause of the issue and future releases may not need to follow the above instructions to be played.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is now available on the PlayStation 5 as of February 29, 2024.
