Cyber Group Studios will be co-developing and co-producing an animated series adaptation of Final Fantasy IX with Square Enix, according to kidscreen. Paris-based Cyber Group will also be handling worldwide distribution, licensing and merchandise.
CEO of Cyber Group Studios, Pierre Sissmann, says the project bible is getting the finishing touches and is planning to pitch it to broadcasters in the coming months. As of yet, episode count and length have not been finalized, but production is slated to begin by end of 2021 or beginning of 2022.
Final Fantasy has seen various productions included animated ones over the years, though this is the first one to be specifically based on Final Fantasy IX. This series is geared to 8 to 13 year olds, with the popularity of the Final Fantasy franchise as a whole, alongside the potential of expansion with new characters and adventures being factors for Cyber Group’s interest.
“The games have a strong co-viewing potential. For those who do know Final Fantasy IX , this will be an [introduction]. And for the many who don’t, this will immerse them in a universe they’ll love.”
