Final Fantasy veteran Yoshinori Kitase has expressed enthusiasm for a potential new movie or television adaptation of Final Fantasy 7, though no official plans are currently in development. In a recent interview with Danny Peña, Kitase, who currently serves as producer on the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy and previously directed Final Fantasy 6, 7, and 8, shared his thoughts on the possibility of a new screen adaptation. He noted that he’s aware of interest from various Hollywood directors and actors in the Final Fantasy 7 property.
“I’ve been hearing things about creators out there who are very interested in the property, who love the Final Fantasy 7 universe,” Kitase stated, adding that he would personally welcome a new “cinematic or some kind of visual piece” from these creators.
Kitase’s experience with Final Fantasy film adaptations includes his work on Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, a CG film from 2005 that continued the original game’s narrative. The director’s cut, Advent Children Complete, recently had a limited theatrical release in the United States, coinciding with the lead-up to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s PC release.
While Kitase’s comments on a Final Fantasy 7 movie adaption suggest openness to new adaptations of the beloved game series, he emphasized that these thoughts reflect his personal wishes rather than any official plans from Square Enix.
