After the leak of roughly 90 clips of unreleased Grand Theft Auto (GTA) 6 footage, the hacker allegedly responsible for the leak is now being investigated by the FBI.
The Hacker who went by the username of “teapotuberhacker” is believed to be a 16-year-old boy from the UK who is the leader of a hacking group called Lapsus$. The group is also responsible for recently hacking the taxi-hailing service Uber. Uber updated their blog about the hack saying that they’ve heard Lapsus$ was also behind the GTA 6 leak and that they’re currently working with the FBI to investigate the group.
“There are also reports over the weekend that this same actor breached video game maker Rockstar Games. We are in close coordination with the FBI and US Department of Justice on this matter and will continue to support their efforts.”
According to The Guardian, teapotuberhacker has also claimed responsibility for the Uber hacks, and the techniques used for both are very similar. This further strengthens the belief that they and the Lapses$ leaders are one and the same.
The BBC reported that the 16-year-old leader of the group goes by the user name “White” or “Breachbase”. He was one of seven teenagers arrested by the City of London Police earlier this year but was eventually released.
The Hacker has attempted to blackmail Rockstar Games, stating that they have the GTA 6 source code however the publisher has since responded that the hack, while unfortunate, will not disrupt the GTA project’s current development.
We will continue to report on the GTA 6 leak story as it unfolds.
