EVO announced today that they would be cancelling the EVO 2021 Showcase , the in-person event for the prestigious fighting game tournament.
The event was scheduled for a November date, with all the regional winners of each tournament during EVO Online competing to be the overall champion for their games.
In a statement today however, the official Twitter account said they just can’t have the event until they can do so safely.
“The goal of the EVO showcase is to bring together the best players from around the world in a live, in-person format”, the statement reads. “Due to the continuing complications of COVID-19 and the spread of the Delta variant we have made the tough decision to cancel the EVO 2021 Showcase”.
It mentions that the organizers will also be contacting each of the invited players individually to “recognize their efforts”, but didn’t clarify on if that means a pat on the back or some sort of consolation prize to make up for the fact that they didn’t get their big in-person show.
The statement had nothing to say about their previously announced return to Las Vegas, where they said they’d hoped to have a fully offline event in Las Vegas by next year.
This year’s EVO was held as an online tournament, splitting the big tournaments into regional ones, but not without their own issues.
