With the recent buzz for Persona 3 Reload garnering the attention of the masses, there’s another persona title that’s flying under the radar, that being Persona 5: The Phantom X, a spin-off title of the ever so popular Persona 5.
That being said, here is all of the information we’ve gathered so far regarding Persona 5: The Phantom X, also known as P5X, in terms of its gameplay, characters, and more.
About
Developed by Black Wings Game Studio and published by Perfect World Games, P5X was firstly introduced back in April 2021 under the title “Code Name X”.
This title is a spin-off title of Persona 5 and is officially authorised by SEGA with deep involvement by ATLUS on the creation of the characters, story, and music. Example being ATLUS character designer Shigenori Soejima, who worked as the character designer for Persona 5’s Phantom Thieves, designing the main character of P5X, and his Persona, Janosik.
Release Date and Platforms
As of time of writing, there’s still no official announcement by Perfect World Games regarding the game’s expected release date, but the game is currently having its third Closed Beta in China until 31st January 2024.
Likewise, there’s still no news if P5X will get a worldwide release outside of China. However, the game had just announced that it will launch in South Korea, so it’s safe to assume that it will release globally in due time.
From previous Closed Beta Tests, Persona 5: The Phantom X will be available for Android, iOS, as well as PC.
Story
Persona 5: The Phantom X will bring players back to Japan, and instead of the original gang of the Phantom Thieves, we’ll be introduced to a new rag-tag crew as well as a brand new protagonist, who goes by the name “Wonder” as of now.
Much like in Persona 5 and in true Persona fashion, P5X will revolve around our main protagonist who lives a double life of being a student at Kiba Academy during the day, and acting as a Phantom Thief alongside your team members to deal with people’s distorted desires.
New Playable Characters
While we’ll still be able to see some our favourite characters from Persona 5 making a return in P5X, mainly the Phantom Thieves of Heart, but they’ll be taking more of a back seat in this story.
Replacing them are our new playable characters:
Protagonist (Code Name: Wonder)
The main character of P5X, Wonder is currently a second year high-school student at Kokatsu Academy. His starting persona is named Janosik.
Ruferu (Code Name: Cattle)
Acting as the Mona of P5X, Ruferu is a mysterious creature who takes the form of an owl, and can also speak in human language and turn into a van. His persona is Rob Roy.
Motoha Arai (Code Name: Closer)
Arai is also a second year at Kiba Academy and also a classmate to the protagonist, and has a cheerful personality. Her persona is called Awilda.
Shun Kanou (Code Name: Soy)
Also a second year student and classmate of the protagonist, Kanou aspires to be a chef. His persona is Mandrin.
A handful of new characters will also be available in the game, however, they come in the form of a Cognitive Manifestation from the the Sea of Souls, which is essentially the game’s gacha banners.
Gameplay
The gameplay for Persona 5 X would largely be similar as with Persona 5, with the main differences being having a more simplified UI and control scheme that caters to mobile devices, as well as the title being a gacha game.
Many of the locations and activities in the overworld of P5X can also be found in Persona 5, with players being able to visit districts such as Shibuya and Yongen-Jaya, along with some of the minigames such as batting and fishing can also be played.
The game’s combat system will also feature some key mechanics from the original Persona 5 game, namely One Mores, Baton Passes, Gun Attacks, and the All-Out Attacks.
Just from the information we’ve gathered, Persona 5: The Phantom X is looking to be spin-off title that could be worthwhile game to try out, and we can’t wait for the release of the game.
