E3 or The Electronic Entertainment Expo has been fully canceled for 2022, both their physical and digital conferences will not be happening. No this is not an April Fools joke.
The ESA, the organization that holds E3 made this statement to IGN confirming that they will not be holding the conference in 2022 but it will return in 2023 with a “reinvigorated showcase.”
“We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience.”
“We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023.”
After running annually since 1995 in June at the Los Angeles Convention Center, E3 was canceled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It did return for 2021 but only ran digital events.
In the past couple of years, many in the gaming community have questioned the need for E3 when many game companies now live stream news such as with the Nintendo Directs and the Playstation State of Play. Sony and EA have previously decided to skip E3 in 2021 for this reason.
It should be noted that while E3 is canceled, Geoff Keighley’s new gaming convention, Summer Game Fest 2022 will still be happening.
It’s quite clear that Geoff is looking to take E3s crown for himself which he made apparent with this cheeky little tweet following the announcement of E3 taking the year off.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some companies release live stream presentations in June anyway out of routine even with E3 not happening.
Regardless the Electronic Expo will return next year and supposedly return in a blaze of glory. Whether it actually does is yet to be seen.
