Dua Lipa has the power of anime, at least, on her side, as shown in the new music video for Levitating.
In the music video for the song off her album Future Nostalgia, the singer adopts the 80s retro anime aesthetic, in a video produced by studio NOSTALOOK and directed by Yu Tsubaki.
The entire video has a very Sailor Moon aesthetic, featuring a retro-styled Dua Lipa as she sings Levitating on stage.
One point were NOSTALOOK should be commended is just how true to form the look of the video is- it’s animated with the same limited framerate of anime of the retro anime it’s paying homage to, instead of leveraging modern tools to have more in-betweens for a more fluid animation.
Similarly, the studio’s also stuck to the 3:4 aspect ratio often associated with retro throwbacks- it’s part of what sells the fantasy, after all.
“We, “NOSTALOOK” have produced an animation MV for Dua Lipa’s song “Levitating”! We did our best to create a retro and cute atmosphere like the 80’s anime”, the Nostalook Twitter account says.
Anime-style music videos aren’t totally uncommon- Interstellar 555 was an entire movie made of anime-style music videos, featuring music by the now-split Daft Punk.
NOSTALOOK had also previously done a retro anime-style short for Overwatch, promoting an in-game event featuring Ashe, B.O.B and the soon-to-be-renamed McCree.
