Wizards of the Coast is set to unleash their latest Magic: The Gathering expansion, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, with Prerelease events beginning April 11. The set marks a dramatic return to the plane of Tarkir, where powerful new Spirit Dragons have emerged from massive dragonstorms, upending the established order and forcing out the previous dragonlords.
The set introduces two dragon-themed mechanics: Dragonstorms, enchantments with powerful enter-the-battlefield abilities that return to hand when you play a Dragon; and Omen, a new card subtype allowing players to choose between casting a small spell that shuffles into your library or a powerful Dragon creature.
Each of Tarkir’s five clans returns with unique three-color combinations and new keywords:
- Abzan (White/Black/Green): Endure lets players choose between +1/+1 counters or Spirit tokens
- Jeskai (Blue/Red/White): Flurry triggers additional effects when casting a second spell each turn
- Sultai (Black/Blue/Green): Renew allows exiling cards from the graveyard for powerful effects
- Mardu (Red/White/Black): Mobilize creates additional attacking creatures with menace when attacking
- Temur (Green/Blue/Red): Harmonize reduces costs for casting cards from your graveyard
The storyline focuses on Narset and Elspeth attempting to contain the dragonstorms spreading beyond Tarkir, while Sarkhan Vol opposes them. Meanwhile, Jace investigates the Meditation Realm for a potential multiverse threat.
Collectors will find plenty to chase in this set, including the powerful Mox Jasper in regular and Draconic treatments, with a limited serialized version (500 copies) featuring Dan Frazier artwork in a Retro frame. Enemy fetch lands return in the Special Guest slot, with exclusive Dragonscale Foil versions in Collector Boosters.
The set also includes five ready-to-play Commander decks, each featuring a legendary clan leader and Spirit Dragon, plus unique showcase treatments that celebrate Tarkir’s clans and dragons, including Borderless Reversible cards showing both fearsome and cute versions of dragons. Tarkir: Dragonstorm will be available in Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Commander Decks, Prerelease Packs, and Bundles starting April 11 for tabletop play.
