The rebrand was clearly not enough, as the card game spin off for Dragon Quest, originally known as Dragon Quest Rivals before Dragon Quest Rivals Ace, will be shut down. The shut down notice for Rivals Ace can be found here. Servers will be closing 5 July 2021, 13:00 JST. In app purchases have also since been disabled, while relevant updates will continue until the servers close. A website showing players’ collections and/or battle records is being planned post closure for players to check out, with no date given. Relevant persons can also ask for refunds or continue to spend whatever paid currency they have left. Rivals lasted for just about 3 years with this closure, roughly 7 months shy of its fourth anniversary.
In the end, the game did not make it westward, unfortunately for those who might have wanted the card game. For a western release, Dragon Quest of the Stars is also closing, but hopefully that void can be filled with Adventure of Dai: Hero’s Bonds. The life cycles of live service games are as such, not much to do but mourn them.
The game is available in Japan for Nintendo Switch, PC via Steam, and for iOS and Android.
