The teaser announcement for Dragon Quest 12 was revealed on the Dragon Quest 35th Anniversary Special! Subtitled with The Flames of Fate, Dragon Quest 12 is planned for a simultaneous worldwide release. With typical JRPG philosophical musings about “making choices”, “the purpose of life”, “having options”, choosing your own way to play and what not, no platforms have been revealed, but we can probably reasonably expect all of the major consoles. The command battle system will see some changes, though not completely removed, as they play around with prototypes.
The eleventh mainline title, Echoes of An Elusive Age, was released in 2017, followed by a Definitive Edition that was first on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 containing a staggering amount of new content to an already massive game. The Definitive Edition also gradually rolled out to other platforms including PS4, Xbox One and PC.
If you were of the opinion that 11 was “traditional”, then 12 appears to want to shake up that formula going by the very cryptic comments. In any case, fans can look forward to the various titles that will be coming out over the years sequentially. Happy 35th anniversary to the franchise, and here’s to many more years yet to come.
