It’s been a while since we heard from the mobile Devil May Cry game in DMC: Pinnacle of Combat, but an interview with the developers have surfaced, so let’s take a look. The closed beta, giving us the first glimpse of the gameplay, occurred in December 2019. The game itself saw a delay of its release to 2020, with no time frame given. There has yet to be confirmation of an international release of the game, currently only limited to China.
Why did Yunchang Game pick the Devil May Cry IP?
Devil May Cry is a cult classic, and several developers on the team are fans of this kind of action game as well as of Dante and Vergil. Hence, they were really excited to get a chance to work on this IP.
Were they pressured to be working on such a large IP?
Yunchang Games has already been established for aa long time, and has plenty of experience in working on games. Nevertheless, despite the wealth of knowledge, it still can be tough to work on Pinnacle of Combat. They have turned that pressure into motivation, to make the game the best it can be. After the first “Elite Test”, the team is even more convinced and encouraged to make this an incredible game.
What did they think of the reviews of players of the Elite Test?
It’s an equal mix of pressure, worry and whatever else. They had immediately gone to social media for feedback when the Elite Test started. They’re certainly heartened by the encouragement given through the comments, and hopes that Pinnacle of Combat will be a long lasting game.
Will the system requirements change with feedback from the Elite Test?
From the developers interview, they’re satisfied with the performance of Pinnacle of Combat, but they will continue to optimise the game to run on even more devices. The Elite Test graphical settings couldn’t also be maxed out.
What features have they taken from the original DMC?
The team do want players to experience Devil May Cry as authentically as possible on a mobile device, so they’ve worked hard to import the character models, movements, and the buildings. Actions such as double jump, weapon swapping and a variety of other things will be further polished for Pinnacle of Combat.
What storyline is Pinnacle of Combat based on?
This is an original story happening between the first and third games of DMC, and has been something they’ve been working a lot on alongside Capcom after many drafts and edits.
Is it difficult to develop DMC for mobile devices?
They admit the difficulty is quite steep in regards to development. They not only have to create high definition visuals for even small screens, but need to give that excitement to players when they’re in combat. Not only that, they have to consider the touchscreen controls that are naturally different from a regular controller like a DualShock.
Many fans didn’t like Dante’s revealed initial look, will he be changed?
The design of Dante’s face and body will be adjusted and optimised. Before the next testing phase, there will be a new version of Dante.
How’s the development progress of Pinnacle of Combat?
The Elite Test in December represented only a small part of gameplay. Look forward to more new features, creatures, weapons, maps and many more, as well as implementation of fixes based off the feedback of said first test.
When will the next testing phase be held?
Well, all they can say is that they have yet to confirm the date, but ask fans to be patient as the team works on the improvements.
