Wowhead, translating from the French website ActuGaming, has reported an apparent Diablo 2 remaster, in Diablo 2: Resurrected. This game will be worked on by Blizzard and fellow Activision studio Vicarious Visions. Details are still scarce, though of course it’s been spread around the internet already. The supposed release date for Diablo 2: Resurrected is apparently the fourth quarter of the year, so not too far off?
If so, the release would be quite a sudden one, as Wowhead points out, titles have frequently been announced a year or more ahead of their actual release, which includes Warcraft 3: Reforged. It’s suggested it could just be the announcement instead of the actual release date, but we’ll know when we know, we suppose.
Besides Diablo 2, three mobile games are said to be in development, as well as two expansions for World of Warcraft over the next three years. Mobile games shouldn’t be very surprising, least of all considering Diablo Immortal for one. Shadowlands for WoW would be arriving, so outlining the next expansion isn’t too out of the realm of possibility.
Vicarious Visions have previously worked with Bungie to port Destiny 2 to PC, as well as developing the game’s second expansion, Warmind, but have otherwise mostly been involved in smaller titles and ports. We won’t know how far they will be involved in the development of the Diablo 2 remaster, so we’ll have to wait as usual.
One last pertinent thing from ActuGaming also says:
Finally, the last subject that we were able to tackle, Blizzard is aware of the failure of Warcraft III Reforged and considers having made a mistake in the communication around the title by having made it pass too much for a remake while it was just a remaster. An error that the studio does not intend to reproduce in the future.
