Red Candle Games‘ Devotion is becoming available to the market again in a physical set, though it does not appear to be available outside of Taiwan at the time of writing. You can check it out on their website, coming in two options (one with soundtrack and one without).
This Devotion physical edition set is only available to Taiwanese fans/Taiwan until 15 June. Whether or not it will ever see an English release is also unknown at this point, but hopefully it might be so that more fans can experience the story the developers want to tell. The game was originally pulled off Steam for a “complete QA check”, including bugs and materials that appeared to criticize Chinese president Xi Jinping. The game has not been available on any digital storefronts since.
Nevertheless, despite its official unavailability until now, the game is preserved, along with the developers’ previous title, Detention, in the Harvard-Yenching Library. On its inclusion of the titles to the library, Red Candle Games had this to say:
As game designers, never have we thought that our works could one day be added to its prestige collection. While we truly appreciate the recognition, we had also taken this opportunity to rethink the possibilities that our games could achieve.
For the past one year, we are sorry for making our community worried. Although the current status might not be ideal, we are still here and that nothing has changed – we are and will always develop games with the same passion.
Detention itself will be opening an exhibition next month, for interested fans. We’ll be hoping more of these impactful stories can continue to be released by the developer for the years to come.
