Devil May Cry V (DMCV) was one of the most anticipated game in 2019 and upon the game’s released. It has already amassed a number of positive feedbacks. So, we went and test out the game ourselves and see whether it really is worth the hype. After playing the game, I can officially tell you that this game is by far the greatest game I personally have ever played. Here is our game review.
Introduction
Devil May Cry is a hack and slash action game where players get to play as Devil Hunters and slay demons. The game’s first appearance was in 2001 and it was already people’s favourite hack and slash game back then. The story started when a demon called Dark Knight Sparda stood up against his masters in defence of humanity. He then became a legend and eventually had twin sons with his human wife called Eva, both his child is named Dante and Vergil. As time passes, the seal of the underworld weakens and The Demon Emperor, Mundus, went after Sparda’s family. In the end, the only survivor was Dante and he later became a Devil Hunter. Decades later, he reunited with his lost twin brother, Vergil. But they ended up in conflict and lost his twin brother again. Along the journey, Dante met Trish, Lady, and Nero as fellow Devil Hunters and their new chapter of the story begins in Devil May Cry 5.
Story
Even though I haven’t finished the entire game, I have already got the gist of where the story is heading. To avoid spoilers, I’ll just brief through the stories. So, the whole story begins when Nero got his Devil Bringer ripped off by a hooded guy. Then a mysterious guy called V showed up from nowhere and offer a job to Dante. Telling Dante that a new Demon King, Urizen, is on the rise and needs to be taken care of, with that they set off. Nero then joined them knowing that Urizen is the one who ripped his arm off and he wants a pay-back. Ultimately, they were unable to defeat Urizen and so Dante left behind to hold off Urizen allowing Nero and V to escape. As time passes, Nero attained a new arm called the Devil Breaker which was crafted by Nico, an expert craftswoman, and went back in search of Dante along with V. So, having banded together again they set off to take down Urizen. Players will be in for a ride in Devil May Cry 5 because those who haven’t play it will not see what is coming.
Gameplay
Having not finished the game, I’ll only be covering a few things that I know so far. First off, the game still looks STYLISH and FUNNY as hell with all the hilarious lines from Nero and Dante. The character designs and voice acting are so damn good although there are some changes and differences, I personally still love it. Players will notice that Nero looks completely different from when he first appeared in Devil May Cry 4 (DMC4). The Nero from DMC4 looks like serious business where as the Nero in DMCV looks a bit goofy in some moments to me.
Devil May Cry will not be complete without any Secret Missions, am I right? The Secret Missions in DMCV have being brought into a whole new level, visual wise and it is Hella fresh. Players will now have to look out for a satanic ritual kind of pentagram and align it in a manner before getting in to the Secret Mission.
Besides that, DMCV introduces the Telephone Booth. Using the Telephone Booth will call out Nico and she will always make a grand entrance into the scene with her caravan, keeping players entertained throughout the game. Moreover, Nico’s caravan acts as a checkpoint and a customization stop. Letting players stock up on supplies before proceeding forward into the story.
One more thing to point out is the amazing level designs, the game looks incredible. Be it in a city of ruined, a demonic lair or any places in the game, it looks freaking amazing. There’s even a level where you fight in a collapsed building sliding off the map.
Nero
The young Devil Hunter having lost his Devil Bringer, is given another chance to fight in the battlefield with his new mechanical arm. The new arm called the Devil Breaker is a masterpiece crafted by Nico, which comes in many different forms. To unlock a new type of Devil Breaker, players must defeat Bosses in the game which will then drop cores upon their death. In addition, players will get a chance of seeing Nico collect the cores to craft Devil Breakers. There’s a total of twelve Devil Breakers in the game, eight from the standard edition and extra four from the deluxe edition.
Devil Breakers (Standard Edition)
Overture: The first Devil Breaker created by Nico, an arm that sends out electric bursts that turns demon to crisp.
Gerbera: An arm that launches powerful shockwaves that Nero can steer in a certain direction, able to fire high-energy beam as well.
Punch Line: An arm that Nero can send off flying to enemies, Nero can also ride on it and perform sick moves while dealing damage to enemies.
Buster Arm: A replica of the Devil Bringer, allows Nero to grab enemies and throw them around as he pleased.
Ragtime: A time controlling arm that produces special Chronos field that slows down enemies.
Tomboy: An arm that boost Red Queen’s and Blue Rose’s damage output.
Helter Skelter: An arm of twisted sharp metals that can penetrate enemies armor and tear them to shreds.
Rawhide: An improved version of Wire Snatch with destructive power.
When Nero loses all his Devil Breakers, he has the Wire Snatch by default. Wire Snatch allows Nero to pull enemies to him or pull himself towards them.
Devil Breakers (Deluxe Edition)
Gerbera GP01: An improved version of Gerbera, allowing Nero to launch himself into the air in any directions.
Pasta Breaker: Nico created this arm for clumsy Nero to eat pasta easily. Works like Punch Line in combat except Nero can’t ride on it.
Sweet Surrender: This arm is capable of healing Nero in battles but incapable of dealing damage to enemies.
Mega Buster: Megaman’s legendary weapon, recreated into the game. Allows Nero to shoot beams out of it and activates special variations on the side roll and jump moves.
When playing as Nero, players can customize their Devil Breakers before getting into the game. Players can get Devil Breaker from Nico in her caravan or find it laying on the floor on certain parts of the map. Here comes the best part! In combat, there are so many possibilities and ways for Nero to fight using his Devil Breakers. Players can go all out whipping demons using Rawhide, blasting enemies into the sky using Gerbera or turn enemies into a shish kebab using Helter Skelter, the sky’s the limit. All of these must have you awestruck BUT there are flaws using Devil Breaker. All of the Devil Breakers are prone to break apart when getting hit while using it, performing a Breakage (charged attack) and Break Away (Evade certain attacks by ejecting the arm). Moreover, players can’t switch the Devil Breakers as they like when in combat, the only way to change to the Devil Breaker of your choice is to break it. Still, it’s a really fresh gameplay in the Devil May Cry series and it’s so cool using the Devil Breakers Breakage too. No words can describe!
V
The mysterious man who appeared from thin air. V is the second playable character in the game after Nero. He is a very special character to play with as his combat style differs greatly from Nero and Dante. V himself does not have any combat potential but he has three pet Demons (Familiar) under his command.
The three pet Demons are Griffon, Shadow and Nightmare. Besides that, V also has a Devil Trigger that calls upon Nightmare and turned his hair white. In combat, V mostly stays away from the fights itself and focuses on dodging attacks and leave everything to his familiar. Griffon handles the range attacks, Shadow handles the melee attacks and Nightmare does both with higher damage. The gameplay for V is so seamless, players can control three pet Demons in one go. I got to say, V is one interesting character to play with and offers an experience that no other character has in Devil May Cry.
Dante
Oh man, Dante! The Legendary Devil Hunter! He is back in the demon slaying business in Devil May Cry V with new powers and new Devil Arms. Dante is basically Dante, with all of his old yet stylish moves set, and let’s not forget his cockiness! The style change is still the same as DMC4, players can change their styles amidst the battle. Allowing players to do stylish moves and rack up stylish points. The most noteworthy things when it comes to Dante will be the Devil Arms that he will receive as the game progresses.
Dante’s New Devil Arms
The Balrog: A set of gauntlets, grieves and shoulder pads that contains the sealed power of the King of Fire Hell. It has two modes that player can go into, Kick Mode & Blow mode and is suitable in facing off enemies with shields. The Balrog looks pretty similar to the Beowulf in DMC3 and DMC4.
Cavaliere: This Devil Arm comes in the form of a motorbike, it was later obtained after defeating the Cavaliere Angelo. Cavaliere is capable in dealing serious damage that turns enemies into dust, Dante can even ride on the Cavaliere and does stylish tricks on to enemies.
Devil Sword Sparda: This Devil Sword wielded by Dante’s father, Dark Knight Sparda, it was introduced throughout the series of Devil May Cry. However, players were unable to use the Devil Sword Sparda in the past until today.
Devil Sword Dante: A sword obtained after Dante awakens his power. (no spoiler)
Dr Faust: A hat given by Nico to Dante, the hat utilizes Red Orbs to defeat enemies.
King Cerberus: A tripartite nunchaku that drops from the King Cerberus. It looks rather familiar because Dante himself also wields a nunchaku in DMC3, it really was nostalgic when players get to face off with King Cerberus re-enacting scenes from DMC3. Besides that, compared to the previous nunchaku. This King Cerberus nunchaku can utilize three different variants of element attacks such as fire, thunder and ice whereas the nunchaku in DMC3 can only utilize the ice element.
Playing Dante is still fun as ever, I personally LOVE Cavaliere and King Cerberus. These two Devil Arms are sick as hell and it is so fun to play with. It is a delight to see DMCV introducing so many Devil Arms to our favourite Devil Hunter.
Verdict
Overall, I would give it a 10/10. This is by far the most enjoyable DMC game I have ever played. The three playable character is amazing as well, it was a lot of fun playing as them even though each of them is unique in their own way. With good story plots, great designs, great voice acting, great gameplay, and most importantly the game is powered by RE engine. What more can we ask for? All I got to say is, no words can express this game. Those who want to experience Devil May Cry V should really try out themselves, you’ll not regret getting it ever!
