It looks like PS5 Exclusive Destruction AllStars could be going free to play, according to fans following its most recent update.
The 3.01 update brings “Substantial changes” to how the game is played, but as of right now Destruction AllStars is still a premium title and not free to play.
However during the maintenance period, VGC reports that fans had noticed in-game challenges temporarily had their names replaced with internal code references.
Several of these lines of code included the F2P prefix, such as “BS_F2P_CHALLENGE_PERFORM_A_GOLD_SKILL”, possibly alluding to the game going free-to-play in a future update.
Unlike many games who shoehorn in a free to play model, Destruction AllStars seemingly has the infrastructure set up for it, with lots of challenges and cosmetics for newer players to earn in the game.
While a free-to-play model might improve the game’s playerbase, it’s unlikely it would actually do so in any long-term way. Destruction AllStars’ real challenge was an install base- by being PS5 exclusive, it meant that you simply couldn’t play the game if you weren’t one of the lucky few to have bought PlayStation’s elusive console.
Speaking from personal opinion though, if this could give the game a breath of fresh life, that’d be great considering how much we liked it back when it came out last year.
