Cruel Angel’s Thesis, the iconic opening to Neon Genesis Evangelion topped a chart for iconic anime songs. The poll was had via TV Asahi’s “Anisong General Election 2020” program.
The Anisong General Election 2020 was a two-and-a-half hour long program counting down the top 30 Anime songs of all time. It was hosted by Precure A La Mode voice actor Matsuya Onue. Onue was also joined by guests Takaya Kamikawa, Atsuko Takahata, Rena Takeda and Yuki Yamada.
Cruel Angel’s Thesis is certainly one of the most prolific songs in anime, with plenty of covers from fans. These include actual gospel choirs, marching bands and even a remix by duo GARNIDELIA. The latter of whom called this song one of the best anime songs at one of their perfomances.
On top of that, the anime opening was also previously voted the definitive anime song of the Heisei Era. Yoko Takahashi, the song’s singer, took to twitter to thank fans for their continued support.

While it remains ever-popular in Japan, Neon Genesis Evangelion recently got a spike in global interest after the series was licensed for streaming by Netflix. This featured an improved english dub, as well as a controversial editing of the game’s subtitles and ending theme.
A Cruel Angel’s Thesis also beat out several other iconic anime songs in the poll, such as God Knows from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The list wasn’t all old anime, as newer fans managed to get Snow Halation from Love Live and Gurenge from Demon Slayer on the list as well.
