With the recent release of crossplay-ability for Minecraft and Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch, many have wondered if Sony would finally allow their PlayStation to follow suit. The case was not happening for Sony until it was revealed at the Gamelab conference in Spain with the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America and chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden, along with PS4 system architect Mark Cerny. A reporter from Eurogamer, Robert Purchese, slid in his concern on the crossplay issue to Layden, to which he replied as follows:
“We’re hearing it. We’re looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I’m confident we’ll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business.”
The statement above is the first official comment from Sony on the current crossplay issue. It was also brought to light that those who have a Fortnite account on the PS4 will be blocked from playing Fortnite using the same account on the Nintendo Switch. That means, the only option to play it on the Switch is to play with a new account, ditching your main account with all your fancy skins and start all over.
Though John Smedley, ex-boss of Daybreak Game Company which changed its name from Sony Online Entertainment in 2015, revealed the supposed reason verbatim from his Twitter (it was since taken down due to reasons) on June 18th, 2018 below:
“btw when I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money. They didn’t like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used on a Playstation. simple as that. dumb reason, but there it is.” – John Smedley
So there you go. Sony didn’t like the idea of players buying a battlepass or a character skin on other platforms – let’s say on the Xbox which gives Microsoft a 30% cut of the revenue, and then logging in onto the PS4 version with all the skins and perks from other consoles. That wouldn’t net Sony any profit at all would it?
However, with the official comment from the CEO itself, they are “looking at a lot of the possibilities” so we might just get our crossplay wish in the near future.
