Chris Metzen, former Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development at Blizzard Entertainment announced a new project today. He announced Warchief Gaming, a new company specializing in Tabletop games.
The company is co-founded along with Mike Gilmartin, former Vice President of Quality Assurance at Blizzard. Also joining them is Ryan Collins, a former Hearthstone Developer who’s now serving as Lead Product Developer.
In their announcement video, Metzen and Gilmartin talked about their storied history with tabletop games such as Warhammer 40k. According to them, Warchief Gaming originally started as a club that people could go to find games to play with other people.
However, today’s Warchief would be a lot more than that, as they say the company plans to provide products. While they haven’t said exactly what kind of products they’d be making, the duo harkened back to the old days of creating worlds based on their tabletop adventures.
That’s not to say the gaming club side is going away, though. Rather, today’s announcement was more of the addition of a Development arm to Warchief Gaming.
In another interview with Venturebeat, Metzen talked about his love for tabletop gaming. Even after leaving Blizzard, he says he still turns to the hobby.
“Tabletop is where I learned to be creative with my friends growing up, playing D&D, playing Warhammer,” he said. “Loving these ideas and playing these games in the same space as my best friends. Those are some of my most cherished memories. At 47, I come back to that. Even after that glorious Blizzard experience, I want that intimate scale again. This is my path.”
