Yuu Toyota, mangaka of the Boys Love (BL) comic series, Cherry Magic, publicly announced that she will be donating a portion of proceeds from the series’ movie adaptation to Marriage for All Japan, translation by user MishimaKitan here.
As mentioned, Cherry Magic is a BL series, a genre that in essence is about a romance between two men, so the donation to Marriage for All Japan is an apt one. Marriage for All Japan is a non-profit within the country that is fighting for marriage equality in Japan. As one can surmise from MishimaKitan’s Twitter thread, LGBT+ themes being utilized in Japanese media is common, but actual support is rarely seen.
Cherry Magic‘s full title is Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!, and is available in English as licensed by Square Enix Manga & Books. The description of the story is given as follows:
Adachi, a thirty-year-old virgin, has developed the power to read people’s minds by touching them. After a brush with his very handsome colleague, Adachi realizes he has a raging crush on none other than Adachi himself!
The film adaptation began screening in Japan last Friday, itself a sequel to an earlier live-action adaptation based on the titular manga.
