Capcom, the renowned Japanese video game developer and publisher, has recently addressed the future and plans of its iconic Mega Man franchise. During the 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Capcom Shareholders on June 20, the company revealed its intentions for the beloved series.
According to Capcom’s statement, the company is actively considering ways to create new Mega Man games on a more regular basis. Capcom emphasized that Mega Man remains one of its most highly-valued properties, highlighting the series’ importance in their portfolio.
Capcom’s financial reports indicate that the Mega Man franchise has sold approximately 41 million copies to date. While this figure is impressive, it falls behind some of Capcom’s other major properties, such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter, which have sold 154 million and over 100 million units, respectively.
The Mega Man franchise, known as Rockman in Japan, has been a staple in the gaming industry since its debut on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. Over the years, the series has expanded significantly, with numerous mainline entries and spin-offs.
The most recent Mega Man release was the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, a compilation of six RPG spin-off titles, which launched in April 2023. Additionally, Capcom released a mobile game titled Mega Man X DIVE in 2020, though the company will end its global service on July 30, 2023. Capcom later ported an offline version of the game with additional content to Steam and mobile devices.
As Capcom considers its approach to future Mega Man games, fans of the Blue Bomber can look forward to potentially more frequent releases in the coming years. However, specific details about upcoming titles or release dates have not yet been announced.
